Syrian Rue Q&A

Hello beings,

I have went thru Nexus multiple time, sometimes rendered information needed sometimes not. Sometimes it is scattered across multiple threads in little nuances. Sometimes you have to wander to other parts of internet where I info don't always consider safe or reliable. Hopefully we can make a thread where future question will be answered with ease.

What are differences between Harmine and Harmaline? Which one causes discomfort?
What other compounds are in Rue that we know of? What are the effects of these compounds?
What is THH?

Comparison between taking:
Crushed seeds
Uncrushed seeds
Roasted seeds
Roasted crushed seeds
Tea from unroasted
Tea from roasted
Taking extracted
Smoking all of the above

Are there tannins? Could you remove them with egg white?

What taste good with rue? Have any of you tried chocolate with it?

I'm on the phone right now so I can't give a reply as extensive as I would like to, but this topic is a good idea. These questions come up a lot, and it would be good to have a single document addressing them. By now, I'll answer just a couple of the questions I can answer.

Aside of harmine and harmaline, there are other beta-carbolines such as harmane, harmol, and harmalol. There's not much information on their activity, but they seem to be metabolites of harmine and harmaline, and thus likely share MAOI effects. They are present in low amounts anyways.

Two other alkaloids that are present in a significant amount are vasicine and vasicinone. Vasicine depresses cardiac activity and vasicinone stimulates it, in a way that seems to balance out in P. harmala. They both are uterotonic (stimulate the uterus), so they are inadvisable to take during pregnancy. This led to the myth that P. harmala contains toxic alkaloids. P. harmala doesn't contain alkaloids that are toxic at the doses usually taken, but you'll still see the "toxins" myth appear now and then.

Strictly speaking there are tannins, I read that recently in an analysis. However the amounts are not significant and they don't seem to contribute much to the discomfort. I think the egg tek would not be too beneficial on rue tea, but I haven't tried it. So if anyone has, let us know!
