I believe I was referring to liquification of spice in order to load it into the device, not the vaporization; I would imagine similar methods would be used for both (use of particular solvents, salt-forms, or oxidized spice).

I believe it's also been discussed in related threads that certain ecigs use ultrasonic nebulization, as a side note.
