I've ditched my Chore Boy copper mesh screens for this:
Shop The Best Smoking Pipe Screens
The wires are thicker than regular ss screen wires and are so close together that spice clings to the screen and does not drip at all while vaporizing. There are no nooks and crannies for the spice to hide in, so vaporization of your entire dose is simple and easy to verify when you return from hyperspace. If you missed some, you'll see it stuck to the screen.
Being able to see the amount of unvaporized spice would be very helpful to newbies unsure of their technique. Another benefit to newbies is not having to deal with getting the thickness and density of the copper mesh just right. And no more worries about acetone cleaning and torching either.
In addition to looking cleaner, it is functionally cleaner, since no spice makes it to the glass around the edge, where if using a Chore Boy mesh you'd get brownish resin buildup on the glass. The amount of condensation you get in the pipe is the same as that with a copper mesh, but cleaning the pipe is easier.
The only possible downside I can think of is that it's easier to scratch the inside of the pipe when inserting and removing the screen, since titanium is harder than copper, and the screen is pretty rigid. However, since the pipe can be cleaned effectively without removing the screen, I don't think it's really a problem.
If you want to try this, super-simple instructions are below.
Get a 3/4 inch titanium 60-wire screen from Aqua Labs. (Don't be tempted to get the 5/8 inch screen that will fit in the standard location. Been there, done that. It's a royal pain to install and remove because of the screen's rigidity. And unless you place the spice perfectly in the middle, some can make it to the glass around the edges and run/drip down into the pipe.)
Bend edges to approximate a dome shape.
Insert screen to just below the filter top. One titanium screen is all you need, and you can dispose of the standard stainless screen.
No pre-melt is necessary. Just put your spice on the screen, and vape using your standard GVG technique.
The attached pics of screen in pipe were taken 22 hours after vaporizing a 28mg dose. As you can see, I got it all. (I'm a lightweight, my breakthrough dose is 20mg)
PS Thanks to cosmicladybug for asking about these in the main GVG thread. She said she ordered two of the 5/8 inch screens and would report back if successful. She didn't, so I assumed failure back then, but a couple of months went by and I had the occasion to investigate them for something else. Then I tried them with my GVG and had success. After my experience, I'm sure her problem with them was either because she couldn't get them seated in the pipe or because they "leaked" between the edge of the screen and the glass.
