Topical nutmeg oil infusion troubles

I have recently tried making a nutmeg oil infusion to be used topically. I did this following forum posts from the dmt nexus. However, the potency just wasnt there, I didnt get effects.

I would now like to crush them into powder first before making an infusion. Certainly it should take less time this way and it would also allow me to check each individual nut for mold (I have never come across a perfect non-moldy batch of nutmegs no matter where) since I don't want to infuse fat soluble aflatoxins or something of the like even if they can't pass through my skin (it still irks me).

Are there particular reasons why the nutmegs where left as a whole and could there preferential aspects to using olive oil, instead of using say MCT oil?

This post had me reading some on the board about nutmeg. Interesting stuff.
Seems to be a subject which, as to some aspects of it, has a lot of inconclusive info... much like HBWR and LSH, etc..

My two cents. When I was a teenager, I absolutely loved the nutmeg high. I found it to be just like pot with a mild psychedelic added. However, I only did it a few times due to the debilitating hangover.

Never tried hydrating. Wasn't common knowledge at the time.

Firstly, do you have experience of nutmeg activity through other methods of preparation? Different people metabolise nutmeg in different ways and this may mean that what works for one person won't work for someone else. Dietary factors also apply.

Secondly, not all nutmegs will be active, so you may just have been unlucky this time. Different plantations will have different essential oil profiles and, indeed, some of them have been actively selecting plants for less psychoactivity.

How long did you leave the kernels to infuse for, and at what kind of temperature? And for that matter, what quantities of ingredients did you use?

In my view, one reason to leave them whole is it makes the separation of the oil much simpler than if they were crushed or powdered. Arguably, it makes the aflatoxins less likely to escape too. However, it is still worth starting off by making a tincture using some of the batch of kernels. By crushing them you get to assess both their general quality in terms of how many contain yellowish mould as well as getting a picture of the likelihood of their efficacy psychoactivity-wise. As you may have read, the ones with a reddish tinge are for whatever reason better.

I've found a tincture made with 70 - 80% ABV to be surprisingly effective even when rubbed into the hands. The infused oil is slower and weaker.

One final tip, if you live somewhere where Melissengeist is easily obtainable use that for the tincture. It seems to synergise well and already contains nutmeg distillate so the amount of actives will be boosted.

I got around to checking and luckily Melissengeist is available in some pharmacies here which excites me. I did not previously consider using a tincture on my skin, but if it works it works

Throughout 2021 I used whole nutmegs from the same store. These I had prepared using space paste ingredients at around 3-5 grams of nutmeg per portion which worked wonderfully (visual, stimulating, and later on also stoning) until I ultimately became concerned over long term health risks associated with "overeating" spices. Estragole containing spices and EO's seemed to work well for potentiation for example but I was too unqualified to judge the studies on potential cancer risks etc and deem them safe (if they indeed aren't of any concern)...

So I moved on to topical oil, these are the short notes from my attempt:
"54g of nutmegs, cracked open once and checked for mold were thrown into jar (ca 750ml). Then filled to the brim with olive oil and a small amount of coconut oil. "

The oil was left to infuse for ca 2-3 weeks and heated up in a maximally 80degC warm water bath 3 seperate times

If u are supposed to dilute essential oils down to ca 3% I should have some playroom to make it more potent, pi mal Daumen. So I may also still try that

Thank you for your input and your interesting tip!

Have you looked in the 'drugstore-type' shops for Melissengeist? It should surely be cheaper than the Apothekenpreise, especially if you can get an own-brand version. Rather than paying €23 for 200mL of the famous brand, I got a huge bottle of own brand from B*dni for €6 a few weeks ago.

Nutmeg should be regarded as having some chronic toxicity, probably whatever the ROA.

Did you notice any adverse effects from the space paste?

Incidentally, my overall favourite was my "Mace space paste double tincture" so if you have small-scale distillation capabilities I'd strongly recommend you try that recipe which can be found through the links in my sig.

My mixture to make infused oil was left in a warm cupboard for about two years and used a much greater proportion of whole nutmegs. I think mine were Grenadian ones which I bought from a wholesaler. So, it seems that perhaps your oil was a bit weak - but you may also have affected some unknown temperature-sensitive component?

Quick update:

I made a Melissengeist nutmeg tincture from several brands of nutmeg which was then added to hemp oil and lanolin to create a kind of "nutmeg lotion". I am unsure whether the lotion is more dermally active than the tincture, but atleast it serves to dilute the essential oils further and prevent an allergic reaction (I hope).

It smells quite nice and seems to stimulate me for several hours. More experimentations will need to follow.

This experiment has made me wonder about flying ointments and the like. Camphor cream, aconite cream, acorus cream, etc....Standalone or during psychedelic experimentation these different kinds of creams could be terrific, no? How come people don't bother making/using more psychoactive creams :?
