Tribulus Terrestris as a RIMA

Migrated topic.

I heard from a friend that Tribulus was a MAOI, and while I doubted that sincerely due to this plant being used by atheletes and body builders for its androgenic properties... it turns out that it seems to be a RIMA.

Wikipedia claims that it contains beta-carboline alkaloids harman (harmane) and norharman (norharmane). The alkaloid content of dried foliage is about 44 mg/kg.

Not sure how strong that makes it, but it does suggest that the body builders who load up on this stuff might have problems with the other things they take (steroids, stimulants etc.).

I am curious if tribulus supplements (available dirt cheap at sport supplement websites etc. in bulk) have any potential as huasca RIMAs. Anyone know anything about this. The one batch of powdered Tribulus Terrestris I saw was dark brown and very dense... it had actually congealed into a shiny, vaguely gummy rock. This makes me think it is not the leaves, but rather the seeds or the root, perhaps ground up. The bottle said it has a sapponin content of 60%.

It might be useful for DMT work.

Passionflower, for example, is not nearly as potent as Caapi or Rue, but it is easy enough to find growing wild in the right places and can be concentrated down very easily. When I was in Hawaii, the shamans there like to use passionflower and the local blue mushies for a psilohuasca analogue... Why not tribulus?

Any thoughts?

Aya forums a few members proved it to work a few years ago. Maybe you can find the thread.

I use 2 tablespoons of tribulus terristris fruits ground, brewed like aya. It is very strong. Never mixed with DMT. I've been meaning to.

Tribulus is more geared toward the MAOI-B type of inhibition, but I'm guessing you probably already know that.

I've tried it many times: as a decoction (of the thorny fruits), an extract (full-spectrum CO2) and as a sublingual extract in a medium of alcohol.

It's definitely active. More of the MAOI-B end of the spectrum though, like I said.

It's active in potentiating sublingual Mucuna pruriens, providing a sort of stimulated tryptamine state.

It's also active in potentiating the effects of caffeine, theobromine, etc...

Hmmm... seems Entropymancer has compiled some of the Tribulus info on the site here:

Dorge seems to have said in another thread that it doesn't work, but the consensus seems to be that it does.

Nice to know, as it is dirt cheap and not normally thought of as a psychoactive. Ordering it from a sports oriented site rather than an entheogen supplier has a number of advantages, actually.

The aya forum evidence that it worked was dodgy as hell, many people have tried the same experiments with no real results. Not that I would discourage further experiments.

sorry for bumping an old thread, but could someone please pm a good source for tribulus?
thanks!

and how does MAOI-B differ from say rue or the vine?

I have avoided it due to it's inhibition of MAO-B. Tyramine is metabolized by MAO-B and not A..so unlike all the RIMA myths you hear about tyramine and rue/caapi, with tribulus you really do have to avoid tyramine..and a number of other things. I eat cultured foods. I dont like having to worry about how much tyramine I have ingested in the last day or so when taking a substance.

I saw some the other day at the market while checking out some other herbs..one day I will pick some up and try it out..extract it etc. Not today though.

It can also be found rather cheaply from any body building supplement or sports nutrition type store or website.

Many olympic atheletes take the stuff to promote muscle mass.

It doesn't replace the ayahausca or analogues though. It primarily inhibits the wrong form of MAO for DMT potentiation. (as amply talked about on this thread already)

That said, it is a very interesting and trippy plant in its own right. It can make you feel rather good, and if you obey proper MAO diet, it can be a fine additive to any ayahuasca potion. In fact, rue and tribulus are very synergistic together.

I just drank a tea of 2g of tribulus T. fruit... no effect. It didn't even taste bad, so clearly it had little actives in it. I guess I will make a much more potent tea next time, until it starts tasting bad? Or does anyone know dosing on this?

^This.

I've heard of bunk Tribulus being sold by vendors in the past. Try this method and if it doesn't work then try 2x as much and if that doesn't work, try it from another source.

Funny I was looking for local aya analogues and found out about tribulus but for some reason I decided against it.
Don't quote me on this but I thought it contained norharman which didn't sound to healthy to ingest.
I'll have to do some research but I remember somthing spooked me off of this plant.

I get mine from a local TCM supplier.
It's very stoning, there's chest pressure like other harmalas (or maybe its because I never followed the proper diet, bad house), tracers, clarity, meditative relaxing feelings, and it helps with sleep.

Ive never had chest pressure from harmalas. That might be indigestion or something house from food you ate before you dosed..or maybe there was a tyramine interaction cus some harmalas in tribulus do inhibit maoB.

I doubt claims of norharman toxicity at normal doses..some studies also suggest harmaline is toxic becasue they gave rats like 50x more than a normal dose for 3 days straight until they found some neurotoxic effects..

House have you actaully achieved a psychedelic or visionary state from the tribuls?

You don't get chest pressure? Well I do. Maybe it's because I was a heavy smoker. Not sure. And like I said I never followed the diet back when I took this stuff because I didn't know any better. Even rue + ayahuasca sometimes it feels like someone is sitting on my chest. I thought this was a common effect? I've even read about this effect from reports on the ayahuasca forum. Hm!

I've only ever taken the 2 tbsp dose and like I described the effects above^ It can be incapacitating but I'm not sure about psychedelic/visionary. I have a bunch here I might brew some up tomorrow and get a fresh perspective on this for ya'll.

According to Voogelbreinders epic 'Garden of Eden' there does appear to be significant variability in alkaloid content from samples from various locations and he mentions that Trout tentatively found traces of 5 Meo DMT in the plant.

Although not a cheap purchase, 'Garden of Eden' is a masterpiece of its genre-highly recommended reference work, IMO.

Well I'm starting to think it was more than a placebo. Now it's the next morning and I feel very peaceful, like what I would imagine a good benzo would do (except hopefully without the brain damage and addiction). Quite nice. My dreams were full of love and kisses. I remember waking up to the sound of my pillow-smooching. :)
