Unexpected Naphtha Impurities

Hello everyone.

SWIM recently did Q21Q21’s Vinegar/Lime/Naphtha Tek and was successful at extracting spice.

SWIM used Klean-Strip Naphtha because he heard it was free of impurities. After his extraction, he did an evaporation test with the Naphtha just for kicks and found that it left behind a faint oily residue.

SWIM is worried that his batch of spice may have oily impurities from the Naphtha.

What would be the best way to clean his spice in this situation?

Would simply redissolving in Isopropyl alcohol then evaporating work? Would a sodium carbonate wash with a different solvent work better?

heat it. if it boils off it is a xylene or toluene fraction. they are often mixed in. that would explain why my kleanstrip pulls so yellow/orange.

BUT the msds says nothing, tho i dont thing it is required. id kinda think you would have to divulge there being xylene, it has that "state of California finds this to be carcenogenic" label on it.

Ok thanks. So what's the best way SWIM can purify their spice at this point? ...or is this something not to really worry about?

How long did you let the solvent dry till it formed the oily residue? Is it possible if you had waited longer, it would evaporate completely? What container did you evaporate it in?

If it really only contains what it says in the analysis quoted by tangerine dreams, then it seems fine. I think redissolving in IPA/acetone/ethanol is a good idea to get rid of volatile traces trapped within the crystal lattices. It wouldnt get rid of non-volatile contaminants though.

Can you re-do the evap test on a clean glass surface and let it stand for long enough.. ?

SWIM did an evap test on the back of a DVD. The residue was visible immediately after the solvent evaporated. It's been more than 24hrs and the faint residue is still there.

SWIM tried another evap on a glass surface and it evaporated much better but there is still a small amount of residue lines.

It seems as if the residue only happens where it took the longest to evaporate. Most of the it evaporates without a trace though. especially on the glass.

You should never do an evap test on a cd. Some solvents will eat the plastic and leave a residue if they are actaully clean. Glass or mirror is the way to go.

Also swim uses ace hardware brand naphtha and it seems to evap very cleanly.

Oh no, the 'cd evap' misinformation still exists! Where did you read that? We need to permanently delete this idea from the world.

Evap test always on glass. Its very possible your solvent just dissolved some of the cd plastic or some other trace chemicals on the surface or god knows what, and it left an oil. Didnt you consider this possibility?

Evap on glass, it wont react in any way. Then report back. My guess is it will evap clean

In the case of the glass surface, remember that as a solvent evaporates, it can change the temperature of a surface. Its possible condensation of the air's humidity happened and left lines where the solvent evaporated. Wait a while to see if this isnt moisture that evaps clean.

Thanks for this tidbit of info. I'm not sure if this is what is happening because the residue lines on the glass are still there after several hours. However it is a bit more humid than usual today.

Swim tried again on glass. This time Swim made 3 puddles of naphtha, big, medium and small. The small and medium puddles evaporated without a trace. The big puddle took a lot longer to evap and made the same residue lines as before. hmmm.
