Please ask any questions about plant cultivation in this thread!

Which ones are easiest to grow in the mid-atlantic area. Also which are better for indoors/outdoors. Whats the best way to get started.Just grab a pot and some dirt and go?

Hello, Coatl I would like to start a dialogue with you about growing my own botanicals. I am a complete noob when it comes this and it seems that you would be a good teacher. Also we live around the same climate area.I am interested in growing Salvia,Cactus,Blue Lotus,P Viridis and also I have 2 Champaca tree seeds but It says you should start the seeds in invitro in gelatin. The thing is I wouldnt know where to start.I was hoping you could help. Also if you would like to move this into a thread I understand. Thanx

Which ones are easiest to grow in the mid-atlantic area.

Trichocereus is always my first choice. It is SUPER easy to grow, as well as other cacti.

Also which are better for indoors/outdoors.

Most all cacti are good for half a season outside and half a season indoors, it's really easy to care for in the winter you just do nothing!

Whats the best way to get started.Just grab a pot and some dirt and go?

Get a few Trichocereus cuttings and some Lophophora seeds.

Any speciialty items needed or can I just use some Miracle grow dirt and tap water. Also Im guessing that the cacti should be potted as to avoid transplanting in the winter.

The idea of growing Trichocereus outside in the ground has crossed my mind a few time and I actually tried it with one cactus this year, I'll let you know how it goes!

Any speciialty items needed or can I just use some Miracle grow dirt and tap water.

Cactus Soil-
Washed and Sifted Coarse Sand
Pumice
Perlite
Fully Decomposed Composted Black Soil
Gypsum
Limestone
Diatomaceous Earth (Coarse)

For Trichocereus-

Sifted and Washed Coarse Sand ~ 15%
Coarse Pumice ~ 15%
Coarse Perlite ~ 15%
Rich Dark Soil ~ 50%
Organic Cactus Fertilizer (Compost) ~ 15%

For “Peyotes”-

Sifted and Washed Coarse Sand ~ 15%
Coarse Pumice ~ 15%
Coarse Perlite ~ 20%
Rich Dark Soil ~ 45%
Organic Cactus Fertilizer (Compost) ~ 5%

Notes- Amounts vary depending on species, try to create a soil make-up that mimics a specimens natural habitat. Study what trace elements and minerals exist in each species habitats and add them accordingly.

Cacti Care Tools-

Thick Leather Gloves
Medium sized Saw
Knife
Razor Blades(For Removing rot, grafting, etc.)
Sifter (For Washing and Sifting Sand)
Spoon or Small Shovel
Small Brush(For transferring Pollen)

can I just use some Miracle grow dirt and tap water.

Make your own soil and water with rain-water.

Any commercial cacti soil can be substituted for "Rich Dark Soil" if you don't have your own compost. The Organic Cactus Fertilizer is just compost with lots of trace minerals which come from adding things like seaweed and fishes.

I think seed is just as good for trichocereus as long as the seeds are reliable no cuzcoensis just real pedros, bridgesii, torches,or some hybrids. Get some good grafting stock for like pereskiopsis and you'll seriously speed up growth in under a year(lophs you should leave longer) then degraft and let it grow naturally,or graft to a permanent grafting stock like hylocereus(especially if you like dragonfruit),myrtillocactus, san pedro and lots more.

Even if you can only cultivate one or two botanicals, please consider doing so... not only do many ethnobotanicals make good house plants but you would be ensuring the genetic preservation of entheogens for future generations... imagine a world where Lophophora williamsii or any other entheogen had gone extinct in the wild... if efforts are not made now to preserve psychoactive botanicals and shamanic knowledge... I fear they may be lost forever. Who can say how many countless entheogens have already been lost in the mists of the past?

coatl are you growing chaliponga yet? I know you will once it's available so to be sure to let us all know when and if a source if found! I have been waiting for this one for a while..god that would great to have some chali plants in my green house!

Yep this is how we will win...
I know we are on the same page here..I want to eventually get some land and grow tons of entheogens, and set up an area to have cermeonies with anyone who wants to expereince these things..that way they will always be available and I can give live plants away freely to others that are interested. I want to give something back to the world, and this is the best I think I could do..preserve this precious knowledge..Imagine if we all did this,to the best of capabilities/space available etc...we could show the wrold that we are more than just a bunch of tripped out druggies..we are farmers, healers, cartakers of sacred and ancient knowledge, keeping the spark of life and mystery alive to share with others..watchers of the sacred bond between man and mother gaia..

I think that may be my favorite post at the Nexus!

I urge everyone to grow these sacred botanicals! Even if you can only grow one or two plants, please consider doing so!

If you can't grow ethnobotanicals than please make donations to places like the C.C.I., United Plant Savers, Erowid, M.A.P.S., etc.
