Very little/nothing in my pulls...

Migrated topic.

hello everyone.

Started with 40 grams MHRB and 40 grams lye, then i think it was 240ml water. I gave it a day or so to sit, shaking it every so often. Then i added my naphtha, and sat it by a heat source. Every so often i would roll it around, then put it back by my heat source.

i sucked out 1/4 of the naphtha, put it in a half-pint jar, then placed it in my freezer. ive done 2 pulls so far and i have not gotten anything yet. every pull i do there is a very little amount of spice, and what there is usually ends up melting away to nothing when i leave it to dry.

i dry my pulls upside down and at an angle so some air can get in there.

this is my 2nd extraction. my first went very well, and im using the same MHRB as the first time.

any help would be GREATLY appreciated. 8)

You didnt mention how much naphtha you used to pull, but, without knowing, I would suggest that you take the naphtha you used to pull the price with and Evap it by about 50% and then try and freeze precip. I believe that the naphtha is not saturated enough. Evaping it down will make it more saturated and you'll be able to freeze precip spice out of it allot more efficiently.

I bet that will solve your problem.

i think the tek called for 1 ml to 1 gram of RB. i ended up using around 60 ml because of the shape of my glass jar.

I would suggest that when you are doing a smaller amount like that combine your pulls into one jar evap it down by about 50% and then freeze precip. Then your naphtha will be saturated enough to snow a bit.

Thanks so far to everyone that has replied. i really appreciate it.

i plan on trying both ideas. You guys said shake it like a banshee, well if i did that wouldnt it make tons of emulsion? ive heard that takes a while to get back to normal?

im still a total noob at this extraction stuff. thanks for not being to harsh guys.

Shaking has always led to emulsions for me, but I guess not not for everyone. I always roll it gently, but thoroughly several times instead. By that I mean mix it really well and let it seperate, then do it again, and again, and again. It gives the molecules lots of chances to be near each other, so the desired molecules can bind with the naptha.
Works like a charm for me!

Ice House Shaman's advice is right as well, evap that naptha some to help the freeze precip.

I think I stopped shaking, and started adding more base at the same time, so you're probably right House!

Maybe I'll shake the next one. It sure is easier to mix that way.
