Ways to relieve jaw tension?

Migrated topic.

I get really bad jaw and neck tension a lot and it can be increased when using stimulants and even minor ones like LSD. Does anyone know of things that could help to relieve this tension? I dont even like dosing as much anymore because my neck tension distracts me. Any help would be awesome!

for starters, avoid stimulants. If you like LSD make it the exception but avoid all others..I get this as well and it can cause ALOT of pain..I notice that coffee would make me grind alot and so would some other foods I seemed to be allergic too..nervous anxiety does not help so try not to stress out alot and also try to become more aware of the fact that you are grinding your teeth or clenching your jaw..I bet you will notice that you do this more often than not. Stop as soon as you do notice it and relax the jaw and massage it instead.

Your posture can also effect jaw tension via the neck..which can in turn cause headaches.

jamie makes some good points, however..

one believes that they have read somewhere that magnesium and calcium should help with muscle spasms and clenching... though they cant remember where, try googling it if you want to find a source / the reason it works..

one takes them and it seems to help for them...

^^The mechanisms for maintaing normal levels of Mg2+ and Ca2+ in the plasma in humans is intimately linked but calcium is not necessary for the absorption of magnesium.Both are absorbed in the small bowel hence disease here can reduce the absorption of both, plus other nutrients/ions.In fact its low Mg2+ levels which as a consequence have secondary effects on calcium handling because Mg2+ deficiency prevents the release of Parathyroid Hormone (PTH), the effects of which are:

1.Increasing the absorption of calcium through the renal tubules;

2.Increased excretion of phosphate by the kidney;

3.Raising plasma Ca2+ levels by the resorption of bone by cells called osteoclasts;

4.Increased intestinal absorption of Ca2+;

5.Increased synthesis of 1,25 DHCC, AKA the active metabolite of Vitamin D3.

Have you ever been to a chiropractor for this? i have some neck issues that give headaches some times, regular visits at my chiro helps alot since he clears up any locks that might occur in my spine.

I also have some bulging discs so really my entire spine is just a mess, regular barbell lifting and stretching is a must if i wan´t be pain free really.

I also experience jaw tension. I inadvertently found out that magnesium help A LOT. I started taking Natural Calm, a fizzing, highly bio-available magnesium supplement for anxiety and as a sleep aid.

WOW.:shock: Not only did it help with my anxiety and sleep, it gave me crazy, fun dreams as well! I highly recommend this form of magnesium. It tastes great and the sweetened product is made with Stevia. I like the raspberry-lemonade flavor the best. I got the kind without Calcium because I get enough from my diet and too much calcium can be a bad thing, plus it's not needed to absorb the magnesium.

This might not be the most useful answer since you are counteracting one chemical with another, nonetheless it is an answer. If you are suffering from consistent jaw tension, Flexeril (Cyclobenzaprine) is a muscle relaxant used (sometimes specifically) for jaw tension that you can use and if you take 2.5-5mg, you could alleviate the tension without getting too much of the sedating aspect of the relaxant. I don't know how this would play out though with certain stimulants since cyclobenzaprine has a similar structure to tricyclic antidepressants (which tend to be SSRI's) but has a markedly different action than SSRI's.

QFT.

Magnesium works very well for jaw/muscle tension, and my experience pretty much echos the above for its other uses. I can also recommend natural calm magnesium, although i think its a bit over priced and you could prob find magnesium citrate much cheaper than buying natural calm brand. Magnesium is one of those vitamins that most people don't get enough of, and its really hard to get too much. It also helps prevent neurotoxicity and cardiotoxicity associated with mdma/etc due to its calcium channel blocking affect.

Thanks everybody, I'm gunna check out this Natural Calm magnesium. I went to a doctor recently and he perscribed me flexoril and it really helped a lot but he only gave me enough for a few days. So now I'm back to the pain. He recommended I see a dentist who could look at my jaw and teeth alignment more closely and possibly recommend me to a chiropractor.

Transdermal magnesium and stretching.

I will get back... just rec'd the trans Mg++. I am the top 5% gritter among 6000 patients
so says my dentist. Been doing Mg++ P.O. for 2 weeks. Read it takes 6 or so weeks to work. Am discouaged as the ETA of complete toothe loss is in 6 days lol:shock:

Ultimately, the only way to stop doing it is to simply stop doing it. Muscle relaxants, therapies and the like are great and there's no reason not to do everything you can to help yourself (so long as it's safe), but these are all to help you in simply putting forth your willpower to stop grinding your teeth. Yes, chronic muscle tension is a challenge. Yes, it can often put one in a physical catch 22 that can seem impossible to surmount. Such is life. Just do it, it's all you can do if you want to keep those chompers.

That being said... N-Methyltryptamine and N,N-Dimethyltryptamine. Asking nicely and being a gentleman about it helps. Oh, and guts... per usual. 😉

Happy Trails.

Hi Mattritt
i've got the same problem

yoga, meditation
and Feldenkrais TMJ -'awareness through movement' exercises are just the best thing ever.
Helps to retrain the mind muscle connection that causes it.

The eyes, tongue, breath and neck all become intimately involved in jaw tension. Researching tmj syndrome, youtube videos and even seeing a chiropractor have helped me. Heat packs work a wonder on tight muscles too.

Try the physical therapy route to learn basic neck and jaw stretching. No medicine can do what that does for a body. I had back and neck injuries that plagued me for years... then I started stretching and found tones of relief. Even an old shoulder blade injury loosened up after 12 years of being tight/locked up.

Guess that might classify as Hatha Yoga.

Hope this helps.
