I believe that you have to build a relationship with the teacher before you can hit the books.  Ritual and Ceremony has another big part in it a form of Respect. Making a Shrine is another great way of becoming intimate with the plant. Not everyone has the pleasures of growing the substance but you can always put your intention into the plant teacher no matter how you go about learning. Like mailorderdiety said, "It is an interesting concept" and yes a lot of people just ingest the substance with no intentions. That's where we come in to give people our accounts of how that affects the experience 10-fold and with our intention we can make a difference on how people perceive the experience.
