Where to find Mason jars or equivalent in the UK?

Hello everyone,
As 'canning' never really took off in the UK, I've not been able to find Mason jars or similar in shops.
It's the large size and decent rubber seal, but also cheap price that I'm after.

What kind of containers are UK based people using during the agitation of basified solutions?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi... I've had a bit of a challenge in getting good glass containers too but a glass demijon works, large preserve jars from a decent garden centre with the pink rubber seal, or if you want a selection of glassware then try the link below:

Jar selection

These are used when dealing with smaller quantities further on in the process i.e. 250/500ml:

Little Jars...

Funnily enough I didn't save the link on that site but I bought from them before too...

Yes they are less expensive... I bought a couple of the large Home Discovery Preserving Jars and they are ok with a good lid. I would like to find slightly bigger but no such luck so far... You can still get a fair few pickled eggs in em... 😉

You can sometimes find glass jars that clip closed with a seal in pound shops, or places like Wilkinsons. I picked up two 2-litre ones, but the solvent does attack the seal after a while. White spirit seems worse in this regard than paraffin.

Jam jars for washes and very small scale stuff, milk jugs- hdpe2- for intermediate, and for large volumes I use a robust hdpe 2 gallon jug I got from a restaurant. Personally, I wouldn't trust large amounts of basic liquid to glass.

man fu>k you manson jar. Get those durable 1L plastic bottle with soft drink mixers(soda, tonic etc. ) in somerfield stores. The`ve offer 3 for a quid.
In each you can agitate up to 70 grams of bark easy. but only 3-4 extraction in new bottle cos therafter hot lye and solvent somehow fu>ked up the lid and bottle began leaking
As a heater get slow cooker from argos (just tenner) fill it up with boiling water from kettle
put in bottle loaded with goodness and agitate and let settle down and agitate....

Initial extraction attempts were with plastic ex-distilled water bottles and the plastic was thicker on the bottom, and it melts as Lye was added direct - mistake there... so it was a bit of a shocker to have the contents almost going down the sink after all that! Pre-mixing would be ok I guess for plastic ones...
