Whole Root Bark

Greetings everyone! Glad to be back on here, new account as I couldn't remember my old email for old account. Not that I had more than two posts when I was on here previously. Anyways I've got my hands on some whole root bark for the first time and I'm wondering how should I handle this.

Smash up?
Does the outer lay fall off and just throw it away?
How much of whole root bark is usable?
Am I really getting that much more usable substance by purchasing whole?

The best method imo, is cutting the large pieces with scissors and then grinding it up in a coffee grinder.
