your breathing on DMT?

Migrated topic.

Has anyone else experienced having to voluntarily make yourself breathe while on DMT? I'm not totally sure if I just decide to take over control of my normal involuntary breathing, but I know in a lot of my DMT experiences I remember parts where I was consciously making myself breathe. Bigger breathes too like I wasn't getting enough oxygen or something, or just need more then normal at that time for some reason.

Are you sure that you breathing stopped?

There was a few trips in what SWIM thought that his breathing had stopped. And the experience was so strong that he could not even react. Over time SWIM realized that it is merely confusion. He now feels his breathing as very deep and calm.

Another possibility is related to illusion caused by the dilation of time: you think you have reached an excessive time without breathing when in fact just a few milliseconds have passed.

Yeah, it seems to be pretty common. I have definitely felt like I need to tell myself to breath, but it normally goes away after a few seconds. I have never panicked from it, but I can imagine that would be pretty alarming if it gets worse than that. I've not read any reports of people finding out there is a real physical issue, it normally seems to be temporary, or a trick of the mind. Still, maybe get a sitter if you think you might have a genuine issue?

I have also noticed I yawn a lot after coming back. My understanding is we yawn when we need more oxygen, so it follows my breathing may have slowed considerably during the experience.

Yes, I've experienced a very similar condition on stronger doses of Acacia confusa-based ayahuasca. It didn't feel that breathing was difficult, but it did feel like I had to do it consciously. Would be good to understand whether there is any real danger.

I can only think of one reason for this. We should breathe consciously to meditate anyway, so maybe DMT forces you to do perfect meditation.

Once, on a breakthrough, I forgot to conciously breath - that is to say, I was not aware of my breathing, probably because I was so amazed and in awe of what I was witnessing. Luckily, the candle-flame man entity that was checking me out paused occasionally and reminded me to take a big breath, which I did, and it was big breaths but didn't seem like I had been derpriving myself, I wasn't short of breath, just taking shorter breaths I think. The other guys in the room didn't notice anything unusual about my breathing either. I remember reading in another post here to not worry about your breathing because, in spite of what you may think, you are always breathing normally anyway.
