absolutely no emulsion !

Swims buddy has had some bark sitting around for about a yr.( sitting in the dark, at room temp. but not air tight), and he finally had a chance to do an extraction......just a simple a/b w/ 2 defats.

After he basified and added naptha for the extraction.... he agitated as normal, then he sat it down (gallon pickle jar) and he turned around for 10 minutes and the layers had completely seperated.

That has NEVER happened to swims friend.... at minimum, it might take 30 - 45min to seperate, and that's w/ a hotbath.

Is this a bad sign, that the bark has oxidized to the point that there is really no goodies to extract?? or could he just be having a good day?

Realizing that the true test will be the precipitation,is this normal?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

NO WORRIES!
Its just the first pull of CLEAN spice. If I were you I would NOT mix it with future pulls. No harm will be done no spice lost but why mix clean first pull with DIRTY pulls that follow.

I ALWAYS separate and keep the first pull as it is the cleanest you will get.

I always keep the best buds as well. Its called personal primo!

I agree, don't worry. A toad I know got a new batch of powdered mhrb that for some reason the first naptha pull is very clear and no emulsion forms. The toad says his yield of almost white spice is very good on the first pull too.
Toad will keep this nice white spice seperate from the rest for special times.

Swim totally agrees with you...he never mixes the first pull w/ the second or third dirtier pulls....just evaps down to 1/3 rd. of the volume and then into the freezer.

He just never saw the the solutions seperate so quickly.

would this be galactic toad??

1 lb... of powdered.

The same bark.....swim did an extraction w/ about a yr. ago and after the freeze precip... everything just melted into a yelow goo (to fast for swim to salvage).

So, he's been defatting, and that seems to do the job.

MHRB is known for not being fatty, but i guess this particular batch, or mabey the region where it came from, has higher fat content ?!?

Nothing a couple defats didn't fix. :d

My swim did his first extractions in the dead of winter last year. Did a freeze precip and then poured off the naptha and let the plate dry outside in the very cold dry weather, and it worked great. Now when swim tries this in the summertime his spice turns to goo unless he flips the bowl upside down in the freezer and lets it sit for several hours to dry, then takes the plate out of the freezer and very quickly scrapes out the spice before the plate warms up and gets all wet with condensation.
Mostly in the summer swim may prefer to just use the lazy mans tek and just mix some parsley in with the drawn off naptha and let it all dry and just smoke that. Swim does prefer getting the spice crystals though and will do a another big extraction this winter .

what SWIM does (to avoid this type of problem), is after all is extracted.....he let's the naptha evaporate to about 1/10 it's original volume. He'll tape some cheesecloth over the baking dish (to avoid air contaminates and dust) and just place a fan on it.

To get it from 300ml to about 30ml takes about 4 - 5 hrs,and then when he does his freeze precipitation.....it takes about 45min - 1.5 hrs for evrything to crystalize (super fast). Then he takes it out of the freezer and without pouring off the naptha, he quickly scrapes the crystal from the glass and then back into the freezer for 15 -20 mins (to bring the temp back down).

Then when he pours it through a coffee filter....he quickly takes the goodies off of the wet filter and put its onto a dry one w/ a couple layers.... to help soak up the naptha and then will swith the goods over to another dry filter and will shake the spice around a bit to get all sides exposed to air.

SWIM, pretty much has that part down to a science.....there's nothing worse than watching the fruits of your labor melt away.

Also SWIM only does A/B's..... a cross between marsofold and vovins... and he usually get's nice white spice.

Yes the MHRB is low plant fat neverless it has some I take the extra measure and defat its not absolute or necessary. If you like layman tek thats fine to you need to re ztal a few more times. I am not one to cut corners so I usually go A/B as well.

I am sure the galactic toad may be coming your way soon. The Toad always loves fist pull.

That scraping wile sill in solvent and cold is a original idea and a good one I may add.
