Active charcoal question?

Migrated topic.

So the more you pulls you do the more yellow the naptha gets so SWIM put in some active charcoal
before SWIM put it in the freezer and and it did wonders.

The naptha went from very yellow to clear as water in 15min. So my question is does the charcoal eat up the spice
or just impurities?

Thanks in advance.

This is very interesting!

I do not personally know that the charcoal pick up, but it could be the case that it has some affinity for spice; a way to find out would be to save the charcoal that was used to clean the naphtha and try to elute everything that is bound to it, like:

a) Save the used activated charcoal

b) Wash it with acetone (save the acetone) :: this is supposed to release any spice and oils bound to the charcoal

c) Evaporate the acetone

d) Bioassay the residue/smell the residue/try to recrystallise the residue etc.

Here is another pull, the after picture looks more yellow on picture than to the eye.

I think it's difficult to say whether the activated carbon picked up DMT along with the plant fats. Activated charcoal is used to remove a toxic substance or toxic levels of a chemical from someone's digestive system. It is also used to remove oil vapors from the air. Considering the fact that the yellows in the naphtha are mostly oils, then one might assume that the charcoal mainly picked up plant fats/oils. Activated carbon has the tendency to remove organic substances from its surrounding environment and since DMT is organic, it probably was picked up by the carbon. I think the important question is, how much DMT was picked up by the charcoal? The best way to determine whether or not the carbon removed a significant amount of DMT would be to do a side by side comparison using two samples of the same naphtha pull. One with activated carbon and the other without it. Then do an evaporation or freeze precipitation to see how much DMT you are left with from each sample. That is indeed a very interesting experiment. If the charcoal primarily removed the yellows, then this could be a very beneficial way to purify your DMT without having to do several recrystallizations.
