Advice on breaking up the vine

Migrated topic.
A hammer is good if you can make noise without raising questions.
Some people, myself included, might have a rough time telling their roomates
"ohhh ... I'm just breaking apart my caapi vine" when they're asked what the hell
all the noise is.

I personally use a hunting knife to start cutting a sliver into the vine.
After it's started about 1 inch, if that, it's fairly easy to pull it the rest of the way off with my fingers.
I'm sure some vines may vary in density but, it works for me and the vine I get.

EDIT:
Some smaller vines are able to be twisted apart.
Usually if the vine I get is < one inch in diameter, I can just twist it (with some force)
and it'll separate into multiple strands that I can break into smaller pieces by hand.

Towels rip. Newspapers also rip, and get tiny bits of paper everywhere (and, there's the energetic factor of the news itself).

Old plastic cutting boards, hammers, and a garage/outdoor setting work very well. Occasionally, a piece may fly if not covered, but there's no comparable loss to towels or newspaper. Sweep when finished...

Never tried it personally, but I have heard soaking the vine in acidified water and then pulling it apart by hand also works. It might be worth exploring if stealth is an issue.

I have also found that there is an amount of "internal interference" when hammering whole vine--if I have a lot of things to integrate and I may not be quite ready to drink, it will be a lot more difficult to hammer. When I am ready, the vine just falls apart. Others have noticed this also.

Hammering the whole vine is a lot of work, but it's very rewarding. The more intimate I can be with Caapi, the better. <3
