Nope, good news: that's not breakthrough material. Breakthrough feels like you are traveling 1000 miles an hour through space time. I'd also say characteristics involve the feeling you are being shown or taught something and that you are witnessing something most humans perhaps were not 'meant to'. Breakthrough literally means holy crap, i've broken through to the other side of The Truth. At least that's my take on it.

Without even asking what you are using the fact smoke is thick but no hyperspace leads me to believe you are burning the spice too soon, with the flame.

Swim never broke through until he got a round glass bulb pipe in which the flame cannot touch the spice, only heat it slowly... even then he ensures the flame is away from the bulb. The smoke is very very thin... not a big cloud like he used to get... but a slow thin stream for 20+ seconds. It really makes a huge difference I cannot stress it enough, swim can use 1/2 of what he used to but reach 10x the distance.
