Are DMT trips completely random or can they be controlled?

I'm looking into the possibilities regarding DMT trips a bit. Are these trips completely random or can they be controlled? For example, can I get back to the place where I was before? Does it all take place only in fractal hyperspace or is it possible to explore this universe as well?

To some degree, with practice and certain techniques. In my experience acoustics and other factors help add a sort of sympathetic resonance to the equation, bringing some welcome coherence to what can often be an intense whirlwind.

For example a large singing bowl while holding a meditative gaze with a large phononic resonator (i.e. a decent chunk of amethyst) seems to produce an absolutely profound effect with practice, even without "breakthrough" doses. I think there's an obvious reason our ancestors heavily favored quartz rich rock in the construction of stone circles and sacred temples.

Some attempt has been made to document the similarities between certain DMT experiences over the years in the form of the Hyperspace Lexicon - perhaps having some kind of vocabulary can help in navigating the spaces too, but I feel there's more to it than having a mere cognitive handle for something. Knowing the word "tennis" by itself, for example, won't guarantee that you win at Wimbledon.

It depends on what you mean by random, I feel like psychedelic experiences are usually quite targeted.
Think about a conversation with a friend; you cant really control what they say, nor is it random. There is, ideally, a playful in-between.

This was a delightful way to answer. Well said. I would agree that random is not the word. Are we holding the wheel, however? I would say no. I had an intense experience that I felt overwhelmed by, and used a mantra to settle myself during that time, which caused changes in my visual experience, but this is the only time I’ve felt like I’ve had any degree of direction or control over a DMT experience, and we’re talking a small degree.

I would say that, like most entheogens, set and setting play a major role. While my DMT visions are indeed altogether strange, I find that joyful enthusiasm always yields a more enjoyable experience than seriousness, apprehension, or an intense desire for something profound. DMT seems to like to have fun. If you take it too seriously it kind of plays with you to lighten you up.

Other entheogens tend to have a somewhat predictable gamut of visual output; geometry, tracers, color changing etc etc. If you’ve taken LSD enough times, you maybe don’t know what your peak vision will be before dosing, but you probably have a solid foothold on what to expect from your experience. I do not find this to be the same with DMT. Each time I partake there is a feeling of novelty and unexpectedness. My DMT visions find a new way, each time, to surprise me, as they present themselves in a way I would not anticipate. Some of them are downright goofy. Silly. Cartoonish even. I find this unique to DMT in my life.

Adding Harmalas, for me at least tends to direct the experience towards the sacred and the numinous.
While DMT by itself may not generally always tend towards this, the harmalas usually do and thus in combination the experience will be more likely to head in this direction.
It may also be that the mindset is geared more this way when one partakes thus.
When I drink the harmalas from my goblet that is just for this purpose, the intent is very much towards a sacred experience and the DMT in combination will actualize a communion with the Paradox beyond Being most of the time.

Think of it as the state of consciousness being induced, more than just 'the drug'. The way you live your life and your practices and inclinations play a role in the types of experiences these tools open the mind to.
