It depends on what you mean by random, I feel like psychedelic experiences are usually quite targeted.
Think about a conversation with a friend; you cant really control what they say, nor is it random. There is, ideally, a playful in-between.
This was a delightful way to answer. Well said. I would agree that random is not the word. Are we holding the wheel, however? I would say no. I had an intense experience that I felt overwhelmed by, and used a mantra to settle myself during that time, which caused changes in my visual experience, but this is the only time I’ve felt like I’ve had any degree of direction or control over a DMT experience, and we’re talking a small degree.
I would say that, like most entheogens, set and setting play a major role. While my DMT visions are indeed altogether
strange, I find that joyful enthusiasm always yields a more enjoyable experience than seriousness, apprehension, or an intense desire for something profound. DMT seems to like to have fun. If you take it too seriously it kind of plays with you to lighten you up.
Other entheogens tend to have a somewhat predictable gamut of visual output; geometry, tracers, color changing etc etc. If you’ve taken LSD enough times, you maybe don’t know what your peak vision will be before dosing, but you probably have a solid foothold on what to expect from your experience. I do not find this to be the same with DMT. Each time I partake there is a feeling of novelty and unexpectedness. My DMT visions find a new way, each time, to surprise me, as they present themselves in a way I would not anticipate. Some of them are downright goofy. Silly. Cartoonish even. I find this unique to DMT in my life.
Peace
