Hey guys and gals, a friend of a friend found some mushrooms he wasn't sure what he found being it was his first time hunting, so he sent me pics and I'm wondering if you guys try to identify what he found as to what he found ?

Description/ location found:
-Found in a lawn with about 4 others
-Jet black spore print (see pictures)
-Long hollow reddish brownish Fibrous stem
That's about all he could explain the rest you just have to look at the pictures

were they growing on cow dung or just out of the ground? If they didn't grow on some kind of dung I would not mess with them the tops of the caps look a little weird and also the stem should not be reddish unless the spore dust made them that way, but then they should be puple-ish. Another thing to check is if they bruise blue at all?

It could be this:

Stopharia semiglobata

he 2jttz,
There is now way of identifying mushrooms just from a picture.

If you want to pick them from the wild please go out and learn from a local guide.

Do not go out and pick some and post a picture online for identification.

please take care and grow them yourself

Yea we are trying I get a hang of identifying them :) though the guide is very vague.
And thanks for the advice, I have no plans to eat these until I can positively identify the spores with a microscope also he has 4 pf cakes ready to rumble :) any info is welcome

Thanks again for the input !!

Yeah, they look like Panaeolus Subb. (Cintulus) to me. They are the most common active and are usually found growing in lawns, or hay. I believe they like poo as well.

You can tell them apart from Panaeolus Foenisecii by looking for a jet black spore print rather than a brown one. Also the gills will be dark grey and mottled in the Subbs as opposed to brown or light grey in the Foes. The stem is also more tough and reddish on the Subbs. Sometimes, if they are potent you can find a bit of bluing near the base on the mycelium. The last characteristic you should find is a pruniose stem (little white hairs or powder that can be rubbed off easily)

expandaneum has a good point though, you should buy some books and a microscope to properly ID them. :)
