Astral Projection

Migrated topic.

Rising Star
I have been exploring consciousness with the help of DMT (Oral & Smoked) for a little under two years now. It has been a profoundly rewarding undertaking that has helped me to explore the world both internally and externally with a renewed sense of wonder.
As a result of my travels I have been inspired to begin practicing trance meditation with the goal of achieving an OBE. Does anyone here have experience with this kind of meditation? or been able to induce OBE?
The program that I'm using is from a book that outlines a 90day routine to help to achieve this state. The whole idea of using a book or routine for this kind of work really rubs me the wrong way, but the idea of this kind of mental adventure is beyond interesting. I feel that the book may provide some structure and techniques that I would not have used otherwise, however I am not sure if this approach will take me were I want to go (it feels to forced). Thus far I have achieved some very deep meditations and I believe a light trance state, but I have not felt as if I was going to leave my body.
Does anyone have any suggestions for techniques that have helped them project?

OBE in which plane? I'm not sure I've ever heard of a convincing OBE in the "physical" plane (with the possible exception of near-death experiences). OTOH, in the so called "astral" plane, would a "lucid dream" (dream where you can control the actions in the dream) count? I know several people who have trained themselves to be able to do this. There are plenty of instructive guides on this available - just search for "lucid dreaming".

Lucid Dreaming would certainly be a step in the right direction. I'm not really stuck on anything inparticular, seeing as how I am not really sure what I am looking for. Dreamwork is a large part of the program that I am currently working with. Has anyone had success using a program like this? or do you have better success with a less structured practice. For me structure and meditation don't really to go together, so meditating in a way that feels like work seems unnatural.

Have you ever considered working with dream herbs? There are several...

Ilex Guayusa: I find this greatly enhances dream recall and produces vivid dreams. I've been working with this plant for over a year, and very gradually dreams are becoming more lucid.

Calea Zacatechichi: I find this plant uses harsher, more "nightmarish" scenarios to forcefully move the dreamer's attention to areas in life which may not be too healthy/could be improved. Its purpose is good, but its method is tough love.

Passionflower: Not a dream herb on its own, but provokes an interesting synergy with either of the two herbs. It softens the words of Calea, and slows down Wayusa, while making it easier to become lucid. Passionflower also does something magical on the full moon. The Passionflower in my kitchen told me so. ^.~

There is also Entada Rheedi and Silene Capensis, neither of which I have experimented with personally.

Long-term and consistent work with Ayahuasca produces very useful dream states post-ceremony, where dreams continue to expound the content of the lessons and allow for more subconscious/personal work to be done.

Dream journals are also HIGHLY recommended!!

Ilex Guayusa:!!

I have never heard of this!
Iv just looked it up and apparently it has a high caffeine content.
I take it you dont drink it before bed then?

get up early in morning a few hours before normal and go sleep somewhere else like on a couch...it seriously has worked for me manytimes..

I did this 2 days ago because my back was sore so I went to the couch and passed out and a had a fully lucid dream it was amazing..I was flying around above a tropical forest fully lucid.

Thanks for the replies!
I have tried Silene Capensis, but I didn't have enough to fully investigate it's potential. I am aware that in tribal context that the dreamers adhere to some dietary and ritual practices that I ignored. I would consider my experiment to be unsuccessful, but I doubt don't the power dream herbs when used correctly or with a more specific intention.
I also am interested in trying Datura Inoxia seeds. Several forum members have had glowing review of this method of dream enhancement.
Fractal Enchantment, thanks for your idea on mixing up my sleeping pattern, I think that is the kind of change that could initiate a new experience.
No one here has had success with inducing OBE through meditation? That is the main focus of my program. According to the author of my program, dreaming certainly is affected by the meditation, but also an a waking OBE should be attainable while in the meditative trance. It seems to me that this state is very elusive. Right now I'm trying to decide between changing my tactics a little or continuing to pursue the program with dogged determination and discipline. Regardless of the end results, I have been very pleased with my renewed interest in meditation and dreaming, even without the big pay off of an OBE, the reflection, stillness, and relaxation has been well worth it.

I drink it right before bed.

Haha. I remember reading that the caffeine in Wayusa has more of a time-release effect and is metabolised differently than, say, coffee.

I never notice a stimulant effect--but then again, I never feel wired from Cacao (theobromine), either, but I sometimes feel very stoned (MAOI).

With Wayusa, the dreaming components seem to build up in the body over time, so I doubt it actually matters when you drink it, if you drink it steadily every day for a period of time.

Dream herbs sound interesting thanks.

I tried that W.I.L.D. technique to induce lucid dreaming a few weeks ago. I started trying it before i fell asleep the first time after hours of just imagining all these possibilities if it actually worked and if one could master this sort of thing. I laughed at the idea of going into my teachers head during the dream to figure out what the hell he was on today. After falling asleep i was in some sort of salvia like dream and i became his head somehow, or was inside of it and around it at the same time, it was really wild. Then we were on some sort of island and talked for a long time. I wasn't lucid the entire time though.

x2 for keeping a dream journal.. Very fun and interesting.

I will recommend Robert Bruce's book Astral Dynamics. It is literally everything you need to know, but not focused on substances at all. You do not need anything more than a mind to induce an astral projection. His book Energy Works is also great, that work helps in all aspects of spiritual development.

Evening Glory,

The program that I am working with right now is written by Robert Bruce. I have been thinking about reading Astral Dynamics for some time now, hopefully it can give me a better foundation for suiting this practice to myself. The other book I'm reading has been helpful but is just too much of a monotonous system for me to follow on an everyday basis. I think if I had a deeper understanding of the principles of Projection I could devise my own method. Hopefully "Astral Dynamics" can provide this kind of info.
Have you had success with Bruce's teachings yourself? I would love to hear some of your experiences. I have achieved a "vibrational state" but haven't been able to actually exit.
Despite not having succeeded in reaching OBE, I have enjoyed the energy work, breathing, and chakra balancing exercise in Bruce's program. His teachings have helped me achieve some great states of being.

Thanks,
Once

I was a fan of Astral Dynamics for YEARS!! It is the best, and most complete work out there.

There is another technique, however, which, after exploring consciousness in other ways, seems even more plausible. I forget the name of the man who coined it (PROBABLY Robert something, did you ever notice how many different Roberts write Astral projection books?), but it is called, "Phasing."

It goes beyond all visualization and mind-trick techniques (MAY be Robert Monroe, or it is at least LIKE the binaural beat approach of Robert Monroe), and says the brain is like a receiver of consciousness. To astrally project, one simply has to move the dial. Not imagine climbing ropes and other tiring circus antics. =)

A simple technique to induce lucid dreaming I picked up somewhere.
It was fairly basic, but could easily be adjusted and perfected to suit the idividual. You start by picking an object that you see on a daily basis.. Like a door frame. The average person must walk through several doors every day.
Each time you go to pass through a door, you'd touch the frame and say "am I dreaming?"... after doing this for an extended length of time it almost becomes 2nd nature... although somewhat strange to an observer. By picking a common object such as a door frame the likelyhood of coming across one when dreaming is more than likely going to happen.
If you have stuck to this technique long enough you'll find yourself walking through a door whilst dreaming, touch the frame and say "am I dreaming?"... Of course this time you will be actually dreaming and realise it, allowing you take control of it.
The possibilitys are endless :)

Ive never heard of "Phasing", I'm gonna do a search on that. The whole rope climbing circus trick stuff is what is making Bruce's method a little hard for me. It just seems so tedious and monotonous. The worst part is by the time I get to that point of the meditation, I have reached a really great mind state that I would love to explore more deeply if I didn't have to think about climbing a rope.
I've heard about that walking through a door trick... My focus has been trying to project in a waking state, but I'll have to investigate some of these dreaming tricks.

I'm glad you are reading Robert Bruces book. Is it Mastering Astral Projection? or Astral Dynamics? Cause I found the program in Mastering Astral Projection very very helpful.
The thing I would recommend that I have never heard anywhere else is picture yourself floating in a ocean on your back. With no land in sight. And just really try to feel it... do you have a primary sense? Auditory, Kinetic, Visual.. ect...? you should develop and create your own technique with that.
I'm a feeling kind of person, so the ocean helped me. Also, I've been shin chan flying into a laser beam... my mind comes up with some crazy shit to help me get out of body. Just create your own stuff and don't over think the process... it's inside you already.
Oh another trick is the falling arm, Lay in bed keep your arm up and when it falls over you wake up nice and relaxed and ready to project.
Hope this helps. And good luck on your Astral adventures!! They can be very rewarding once you get the hang of it!!!

Thanks AlienSong,

I am reading "Mastering Astral Projection", I recently made some progress which has me reinvigorated about the process. I achieved a full body vibrational state which I had been missing for several attempts, I found my heart rate increasing and I had the distinct feeling that I was on the verge of an exit. This progress has me encouraged, right now I am on day 53 of the 90 day program but I started about four months ago.
This book is set up as a 90 day program, with a set of exercises for each day. I just don't have the motivation/discipline right now to truly focus the way I need to every day. I find myself more eager to practice the program more like two or three days a week. I hope that this doesn't impede my progress. I also have slacked some with the dream journaling. I am very engaged by the meditative process that he suggests. I find the breathing and energy exercises very helpful and pleasureable.
You know, I noticed that he mentions the arm trick as advice somewhere later in the program when I was skimming ahead. That seems like a cool idea. I also will try your ocean suggestion, so far the ladder and the rope just haven't done it for me.
I am encouraged that his program helped you. I know that my mind is strong, and that I am capable of astral travel. I would love to hear about some of your experiences using these techniques.

Thanks,

Hi Once , I have been a "natural" astral projector since I was a little kid and have still retained the ability to this day . As mentioned Robert Monroe's books are quite helpful Experiential Expanded Consciousness Meditation Programs and Research . I believe it was FE who mentioned about taking a nap , it does work well , but you must not fall asleep.

You want to stay in that state ( body asleep , mind awake) just before you fall asleep , that is where the magic is . All you really need to do is practice, practice and practice , you will be successful .
Complete rest is mandatory , if you are tired you will just fall asleep . Sometimes the best time is first thing in the morning when you wake up , instead of getting up right away stay in bed relaxing . If you fall back asleep , when you wake up just stay there . You want to practice how to keep your mind awake and your body is asleep . It is mandatory that you are not disturbed by ANYTING, no noise , calls , music, people , you must be totally safe . Even light can be distracting at first .

There are a vast number of methods that can aid you , have a look at different books and keep it simple . Modify a method that seems to fit you and make it your own , again look at the Monroe stuff . Focus and intent is important , you don't need to feel or experience every step or progression . Sometimes I realize I am "out" without observing the process .

I believe everyone can and does do it , most just don't remember the experience .There really in no religious mantras or spiritual preparation or diet needed for success . Start out with keeping your mind awake at night and just observe your body as it slowly falls asleep .
Hope this helps and good luck with your travels !
