Better Search Bar

The new forum is amazing, I keep finding so many nice little features that make life easier.

The search function is probably the worst I've used anywhere, though. There's been times I searched a term and read through every single result, then later come across a thread I never seen before that should have been in those results.

Or I'll just be trying to review something that was said in a recent thread, but I don't remember what the thread was about exactly (one of the thousands of beginner advice ones). So I typed the phrase I'm looking for into the search, but the first few results are posts that have zero relevant keywords. And "pentane" "iso-pentane" "pentane wash" all turn up the same results ordered in the same order...

Shouldn't "iso-pentane" reduce the results since it's more specific? And promote exact matches to "iso-pentane" to the top of the results?

I feel like it shouldn't be so hard. It was less than a month ago, I posted in the thread, the term was repeated multiple times within a few posts, including by me. So there should be multiple hits for the search term within the same thread. That's three big factors that should make the thread stand out in a search, but it's not even on the first page. Idk if its even worth the time to dig for it.

It's kind of traditional that the Nexus search engine is slightly terrible 😁 You're not the first to have mentioned this, nor will you, I suspect, be the last - having complained about this myself.

Honing search terms to get the result one wants always has been something of an arcane skill. There's also the option of using an external search engine by adding the term "site:forum.dmt-nexus.me" plus whatever it is you're looking for.

As far as actually improving the function of the Nexus search engine, that would require personnel whom we unfortunately do not have at present.

Frustrating, I know. If it's any consolation, the search was probably slightly worse on the old forum 🤣

Did you try searching for "isopentane"? [I won't ask about 2-methylbutane…]

A few OCD rinses in isopentane should do the trick 😁

But, seriously, that's a good point - the outside of the crystal will begin to redissolve on warming.

I'll second not evaporating ones solvent as well.

Thanks :D

I did eventually find it and realized the missing hyphen, it does come up right away without it. Oh wait, non-hyphenated is correct? I shouldn't have doubted xD

And I guess I missed your joke the first time but I did notice I can't get isopentane.

I remember now I was trying to dig up the thread to ask you in a semi-relevant way:

What do you think about washing off the mother liquor with simple dish detergent solution? I think they're generally alkaline, or could be added to an alkaline solution. My theory is the crystals won't dissolve into the alkaline water, but surfactants will lift the non-polar liquid residue.

I wouldn't put detergents anywhere near an extraction.
