caapi alcohol extraction

Migrated topic.

Recently I made 10x caapi using the boil method and wasn't so satisfied. Doesn't burn well at all and tastes pretty bad and harsh.

I was wondering if I can soak 10g of caapi leaf in 96% grain alcohol for a while and then evap it onto 1g dry caapi. I think it would be better and much less resinous.

I definitely will when I have time, currently I don't have much time at my dispense though.

So if I can just soak something and leave it, it makes much more sense for me currently.

I'm only home on weekends every other weekend currently so leaving it 2 weeks works perfectly.

So is it 2 weeks that I need to leave it in the alcohol? Haha

Ideally you want an alcoholic solution with a higher percentage of water, as harmalas are poorly soluble in IPA or etoh and quite soluble in water. Jorkest did comparisons years ago and found 60% alcohol solutions to greatly outperform 90+% for this type of approach.

My personal way of doing it was to make the blend on a full moon, and wait a full moon cycle to evap. I also use 20 grams to 1 gram for a theoretical 20x blend. My last batch however I missed the full moon and decided just to wait until the second, so two months on one blend. Needless to say it works, and not to terribly harsh.

That seems like some nice info! Thanks.

Yes,indeed.Nice info.
Thank you !
I last batch was done with 99,9 etoh ...
It was also good , but next time i will save me some alcohol for a better quality :)

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I had some questions. I'm trying to see if I can do a caapi extract to administer sublingually before vaping DMT. Would a 60% alcohol extract work well for that?

Or, if harmalas are poorly soluble in alcohol, why even bother with the alcohol? Couldn't I just steep caapi in distilled water for a few weeks, kind of like a cold brew coffee?

Or would it just be better to do a harmala extraction and make a tincture?

Let me know! Thanks

The alcohol acts as a preservative, so it has that clear advantage over distilled water where a prolonged soak would very possibly go mouldy or otherwise putrid. The suggestion of 60% alcohol is to compensate for the poor solubility of the alkaloids in ethanol. The extra water helps to keep them in solution.

Similarly, starway7 has reported highly satisfactory results by extracting rue seeds with export strength vodka (40% abv) and evaporating down to a resin.
