Hi All!

I've been working on this for a bit making modifications along the way and wanted to post it:

1: in case it's helpful to some
2: in the hopes that others with more experience might have some modifications.

My goal is to create a stable caapi tincture that reduces body load while not sacrificing too much yield (when compared to water brew). I am sure this will seem overly complex to some but I think it pays off.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Caapi Tincture Recipe (150 g Powdered Caapi)

First Pull (3 Weeks)

Ingredients
* 150 g freshly powdered caapi
* 900 mL 191-proof ethanol (Everclear)
* 300 mL water
* 15 mL white vinegar (5%)

Process
1. Combine all ingredients in a large glass jar.
2. Stir thoroughly.
3. Seal the jar.
4. Keep warm when convenient (35–45°C / 95–113°F).
5. Shake or stir occasionally.
6. Extract for 3 weeks.

First Separation
1. Let the jar sit undisturbed for 24 hours.
2. Decant the clearer liquid from the top into a clean container.
3. Pour the remaining liquid and solids through a coarse strainer or nut milk bag.
4. Press the solids thoroughly.
5. Combine all recovered liquid.
Save the solids.

Second Pull (1 Week)

Ingredients

* Saved solids
* 525 mL 191-proof ethanol
* 175 mL water
* 10 mL white vinegar (5%)

Process
1. Return solids to the jar.
2. Add fresh solvent.
3. Stir thoroughly.
4. Keep warm when convenient (35–45°C / 95–113°F).
5. Shake or stir occasionally.
6. Extract for 1 week.

Second Separation
1. Let the jar sit undisturbed for 24 hours.
2. Decant the clearer liquid.
3. Strain the remainder through a coarse strainer or nut milk bag.
4. Press the solids thoroughly.
5. Combine with the first extraction.

Clarification
1. Let the combined extract sit undisturbed for 24 hours.
2. Decant the clearer liquid.
3. Optionally filter through paper filters if desired.

Reduction
1. Use a double boiler or water bath (if using an open flame be mindful of vapors, use overhead range).
2. Avoid direct heat.
3. Keep temperature below approximately 60°C (140°F).
4. Reduce to the desired final volume.

Looks good on paper afaict. Have you made it? How is the end result, experientially?

I also wonder if you could accelerate your production timeline by using a cannabis butter/tincture maker machine, and if that would be an acceptable trade-off in terms of quality. Harmalas are fairly heat stable, yes?
So I imagine you could shorten the timeline from a month to a day or two, more or less, with a small investment in kit

That's an interesting idea that never occurred to me, will research that for sure. I've made cannabis tinctures for years but always analog.

Given the natural variance of alkaloid potency in caapi I think the most effective test is to compare it to a more basic tincture process of the same batch of vine. I tested the previous version last week and, if i can motivate myself, will test this newer version in the next few days.

Have you made caapi tincture before?
