My cat always comes and sits by me during journeys, Its strange coz he always seems to act noticeably differently while I'm on a journey. I definitely think cats have a highly sensitive sense and are highly attuned to pheromones and to changes of positive or negative energy. My cat seems to have a six sense where he can tell if someone is a negative or positive person, he never goes near negative people. So i definitely think peoples journeys can rub off on their animals.
