I totally agree here, stay away from those kind of silly toys.
Relating to their size, as the study stated, they are working as an antenna and amplify signals instead of protecting against them.
Even if such a device is conducted to a grounding point of the electrical system of the house it will not protect you, because HF-signals cannot be grounded by massive wires such as used in the household electric systems.
This comes because of the skin effect.
