Cleaning silly putty

I love silly putty. I use it to strengthen my fingers for guitar, and stress relief. I have a wad of 10 eggs worth of silly putty that I have been using daily for a few months now. Needless to say its really dirty lots of little black dots and hairs in it because I leave it lying around. I am curious if anyone knows a way to remove this stuff. Maybe a chemical that silly putty is soluble in. It's not that bad right now, but I know it's going to get nasty in a while. It melts when you heat it up so it can be mixed with easily. I plan on adding it to a pot of water with some food coloring so I can make it a different color. I was thinking that if I let it sit in the boiling water for long enough it will evaporate the water and leave the silly putty, do you think the dirt will float to the bottom of the water, or will they stay in relatively the same spot in the silly putty?
