Cleansing of Harmaline HCl

SWIM have made some Harmine HCl using NaCl, and now he have some brown-yellow christals.
SWIM is short in pure NaCl (hard to find and very expensive) for further cleansing, and he is interested in some alternative way of cleaning this christals. Is there any solvent that wouldn't dissolve hydrochloride salt of Harmaline and remove the impurities?

SWIM want to smoke his Harmine. Is it necessary to make a freebase from it, or it is smokeable in hydrochloride form?

If it isn't, and freebasing is necessary, please if anyone can give directions to SWIM how to do it? SWIM is terrified with possibility that to high pH can destroy alkaloids so he is scared to use NaOH :?. Any suggestions?

1. Dissolve all of your harmala HCl into water.
2. Add a little NaOH and stir with a glass rod until the colour of the solution suddenly changes to white.
3. Let the formed freebase crystals settle at the bottom.
4. Siphon off the water at the top and keep the freebase at the bottom.
5. Repeat step #4 until the siphoned water is transparent and clear (no colour).
6. Filter freebase thru a coffee filter and let dry.
7. Add the freebase to enough dilute pH3 HCl until all is dissolved (converted into salt)
8. Now you shall have a crisp and transparent solution with a yellow hue, let dry completely in a glass dish.
9. Excess acid and water has evaporated, only harmala salts remains; Enjoy pure Harmala HCl.

Another purification technique of Harmala alkaloids is described by Phlux in his post "Possible new tek for anything" here In a nutshell, raw harmala HCl alkaloids are dissolved in a minimal amount of H2O that has been treated with lemon (lime also works) juice. The solution is then combined with an equal volume of acetone and refrigerated. Harmala alkaloids will precipitate out over the course of a few hours. SWIM tried this method and it works very well! It also works using HCl as the acid, but this takes much longer for the alkaloids to precip. The resulting alkaloids were noticeably cleaner than trying several rounds of Manske style cleaning. One benefit of this purification technique is that the acetone helps keep many other impurities in solution while the purified harmaloids crash out. Also harmaloid HCl salts are insoluble in acetone, so there is less risk of washing away SWIY's goodies. If SWIY wants to smoke or vaporize the harmala alkaloids, they must be in freebase form.
1. Dissolve a harmala HCl salts in a minimum of water.
2. Freebase alkaloids by adding a base which has been dissolved in water(preferably Sodium Carbonate, NOT sodium bicarbonate or baking soda) until pH 10-11 is reached. DO NOT USE NaOH if you intend to smoke or vaporize the FB alks, as there WILL be residual NaOH in them. Sodium carbonate is in general a much safer base to work with and will not destroy SWIY's alks and is not as great of a health hazard to heat up.
3. Let precipitates settle, decant, filter and dry.
4. Enjoy!

Check the wiki harmala extraction guide. Just redissolve, filter, add sodium carb and filter after a few hours. Definitely freebase your alks if you want to smoke them.
