Confused about freezing

This was my first attempt, so should be an easy fix.

I decided to use a mason jar sealed to freeze, because that's all I had on hand this weekend. Lots of crystals, but I lost my entire yield to condensation while airing it out. -$50 of MHRB

What's the correct glass to use? Someone told me a casserole dish or something. I have a 90s freezer that gets very cold, and I was doing Norman's Tek.

Will try again this week

I don't understand the 'airing it out' part. Did you take it out of the freezer? Did you evaporate the solvent? Or did you bring the jar to room temperature, dissolving the crystals back into the solvent?

Rule of thumb is: 1mg DMT will dissolve in 1ml cold (-20 C) solvent, but 30mg will dissolve per ml at room temperature (20 C). So if you got nice crystals in the freezer, then warmed the solvent to room temperature, that would explain the crystals going away again.

If you still have the solvent: freeze it again. Then, when the crystals emerge, give them time to sink to the bottom, where they will stick. 12 hours is enough normally. Then poor off the solvent, let dry, scrape. Notice that that solvent still has 1mg/ml of DMT in it, which you could get out by evaporation, but the majority (29/30th) will be the crystals in the jar.

You can use any glass, but borosilicate is best as it wont crack when frozen/heated that easy compared to normal jars. People use casserole dish (with lid), because they are most often made out of borosilicate glass, and they are easy to scrape out, and when evaporating: the extra surface will speed up the process. But you can use any glass at hand if you don't have one.

Best of luck with your yield!

PS: when doing a new tek, try it out on a small batch first, so you can get the process under control, before you commit all your MHRB to it

I believe the issue was the glass itself. I took it out of the freezer, immediately used a baster to remove the majority of naphtha to recycle, then flipped it upside down on a tilt to let the rest drain/evaporate. I came back, and I had a soaking wet mason jar from condensation, and all of my stuff was soaked into the paper towel under it.

Casserole dish has been ordered. I'll be extra careful to use exact amounts of solvent next time as well. Thanks!

Doesn't really matter the dish it is more about how concentrated your naptha is with DMT. All the decrease in temperature does is increase the rate at which the DMT will precipitate and it might be preference but I prefer Cooling it down slower for denser crystals.

Also you don't want the naptha to reach room temperature before it evaporates or dmt Will melt back into the naptha.

Ideally you want a smaller glass container though I've found mason jars to be too deep. I really like the micro Pyrex dishes they got at targets and walmarts that come with snap lids.

When pulling your dish out of the freezer put it in front of a cold fan inside of a bigger Pyrex dish. Like you are making a ramp with your smaller Pyrex dish place inside of the bigger dish with the lip of the smaller dish with your crystals leaning on the inside lip of the bigger Pyrex face down.

If you have a window AC unit that would be preferred. Works like magic. Just place in front upside down in the Pyrex. Once dry take out scrape and then place a piece of foil with holes in it or a paper towel with a rubber band or panty hoe's over the container and place back in front of said fan or window AC unit.

dont give up! And plus its all dmt even if it melts just scrape it around till it powderizes. I had this happen a lot during the recent heat waves staying in a place with a mediocre freezer and no insulation.

Best of luck

A jar is perfectly acceptable, possibly better than a casserole dish in your circumstances. When you flip it to drain off the very last drops of solvent after pipetting of as much of it as possible, put the lid back on and place the jar upside down in the freezer to drain off. You would best place the jar with a slight tilt so that drops don't collect on the base of the jar (now at the top). After a suitable amount of time, the remaining naphtha will be in the lid - with any luck, minus any crystals of product - and you can then place the jar over your casserole dish for airing, more or less as @The_Embalmer suggests.

If it's really humid where you are, keep the lid on the inverted jar while it warms up to room temperature. That way condensation will only form on the outside. You may have to be wary of pressure build-up from the air inside the jar warming up as well, so place the jar in a casserole dish in case this forces any of the naphtha out.
