Dear DMT-Nexus member,
Thursday April 28th at around 18:00 CET the DMT-Nexus was attacked by a so called DDoS attack. This means that a lot of computers are making lots of requests to overflow the server and making it unavailable to the rest of the internet.
The problem of a DDoS attack is that you don't know who, what or why the attack is taking place. There is also not much you can do to stop it right away but we are working on a permanent solution.
The server itself has not been compromised. On the DMT-Nexus server all IP addresses used for making posts and signing up are quadruple encrypted by an offsite mechanism with different encryption algorithms, the encryption keys and encryption code are not stored on the DMT-Nexus server itself! We have to store the encrypted IP's because we need it to combat trolls. Also there are no internet activity logs of any kind kept on the server. Due to this and the standard SSL connection all posts on the DMT-Nexus are pretty much anonymous. Even if someone snatches the server they cannot do much with the content on it.
Currently we are looking at options to better protect the DMT-Nexus server from future DDoS attacks. One of the actions we will take is the movement of the server to another datacenter where we will have a dedicated high bandwidth line.
I want to thank all people who kept a high spirit during our time underground and for all the other fora out there that welcomed the DMT-Nexus refugees. Looking back at the attack and how it evolved I can clearly state that with the DMT-Nexus members working together we withstood this 'test' quite easily. It also made sure we now have extra backup plans ready in case something would happen to the DMT-Nexus in the future.
Kind regards,
The Traveler
