My father a few years ago had to undergo something similar. It was discovered after he went in for bladder related problems that he had cancer. Chemo was horrible on him. Hospital nights were crude and frightening and he would often go many nights without sleep. I stayed in the hospital for hours on end, especially when he was in surgery.
The recovery process was extremely difficult. He had cathader's in all day every day for a month and the pain lasted for quite some time.
He made a full recovery though. In fact, just last week for spring break we both went on a long day hike together. Although I can't relate to a brotherly bond, my father is the world to me. It killed me day in and day out to see him in such a condition and I don't think I would have ever recovered if I lost him so soon.
The world can be a cruel place, but humans are much stronger than most give credit for. Will power alone will win half the battle, but the other half is support from their closest family members and friends.
I was in that hospital every day for too many hours. This was while I was still in high school and as much as it hurt me to not be by his side and to be in class learning some bullshit lesson that I would never need again in life, he encouraged.. No, he needed me in school more than he did by his side. It still hurts thinking about it and brings tears to my eyes knowing that I almost lost him.
But like I said, since then he has made a full recovery and now and then a few jokes are tossed around about the incident.
All my love goes out to your family and your brother.
I hope everything is going well as I am posting quite some time after the initial post.
