discarding used materials

Migrated topic.
Add acid until you have a neutral pH. Best use hydrochloride acid. HCl + NaOH --> NaCl + H2O. Then it's just salty MHRB soup and you can safely dispose it in the garbage and pour liquids down the drain. Just make sure that there is no naphta in it.

i dont have hcl on hand. would a lot of vinegar work? 100 grams of lye was used.

Lye is used as drain cleaner, so it's safe to go down the drain. And yes viniger will work.

thanks guys. one more question why cant there be naptha in the mix before discarding?

sorry for the noob questions. im know i could find the info else where but ya'll guys are the experts. two more questions why cant it have naptha when discarding.

Nonpolar solvents aren't something you want to be polluting the water supply with, even waste water. You can use nonpolar solvents for a lot of things like cleaning and stripping stuff. If you must dispose of them there is usually a disposal policy specific to where you live, ask your local council or waste disposal as it varies from place to place.
