DMT Emulsion and NaCl

I use 100g of NaCl to prevent emulsions in my DMT extractions. I don’t use more lye because I find it unnecessary and a pH 14+ can be achieved by a minimum of 30g. I use 40g to be safe, 50g if I’m feeling silly.

Anyways, non-ionized NaCl works like a charm to prevent emulsions. I’m just curious why this is if somebody can explain it to me. Would like to know what is occurring.

Thanks. Much love

The salt increases the ionic strength of aqueous phase, making it more polar. The non-polar naphtha separates more easily from the water as a result. It may be a bit more complicated than that, since we're talking about STB here. There may be surface effects, such as increased charge density, on bark microparticles that make them less likely to interact with the naphtha in a way that promotes emulsions.
