Does anyone on the Nexus have much experience with a Volcano Vaporizor? Flavor question...

SWIM hadn't used his Volcano for spice in quite a while. He had used it for light journeys before but could never break through with it. He had tried medium heat settings and used a liquid pad previously but did not know he could pre-melt the spice. So...he broke it out to try pre-melting and turned the heat up to maximum (manual version, dial set to '9') to see if he could break through.

After trying it he remembered two things: it's super easy, but it tastes horrible!!!

Has anyone experimented with adding liquids or flavorful herbs to enhance the taste with any success? SWIM has used straight spice and enhanced leaf (Electric Sheep: Calea/Blue Lotus) and both ways tasted the same. He has a few other herbs lying around to experiment with but was hoping to find a few suggestions from someone with experience before his next journey.

If it smells horrible it means that you've burnt your spice, set the temp. lower.

having smoked cannabis out of a volcano numerous times i always felt that the dmt vapor would re-crystalize in the bag while its inflating. this would give you an incredibly harsh hit no matter what the temp is and also the crystals are very hard on the lungs.

you said you've used the volcano before with dmt, is this the case?

plenty of experience with this, dial at 6 is fine, vapor does not re-crystalize in the bag, maybe it does eventually but in no time to be concerned about, the vapor is always somewhat unpleasant, definitely worse burnt, changa blends help but if you can't breakthrough with the volcano it must be down to dosage, technique and possibly purity because the volcano has been found to be the easiest breakthrough device for SWIM's research.

I used the volcano for my first time, it was very very powerful, i think i set the temp around 190c, then on the second bag turn it up to 230c, it always tasted the same & i even grew to like that taste. The first ever toke was like razorblades on my lungs though.

I hope you have a separate mouthpiece & chamber for your volcano or enjoy the taste of spice with anything you'll use in there for a good while... mine is only just starting to taste normal again, i do think the volcano is the best way of taking it as you can take it bit by bit, or finish the whole bag if you want/can.
I've read reports of people having 2/3 bags next to them so they can keep topping up.

I liked the bag method as whenever i 'came back' my buddy had always left a bit in the bag which is nice for the come down. I didn't have any crystallization on the bag, i've heard that mentioned a few times, but i left spice vapor in there for over 5 minutes with NO re-X in there...not that i could see

If i was to spend money on a DMT tool it would either be for a GVG or for a spare mouthpiece/chamber for the volcano, probably the latter as imo theres no need for me to have a portable DMT device as i'll always do it at home.

Thanks for the replies so far, guys. SWIM has two bags/mouthpieces but only one chamber. He hasn't noticed carryover taste issues...he just cleans the chamber/screen with IPA when switching back and forth. The vapor was not harsh at all...it actually has a feel to it that is more 'cold'. It's just the aftertaste that is so horrible (in his opinion).

As far as breaking though - possibly purity is the problem...he hasn't been able to get that THICK, DENSE white cloud like he can using a regular pipe+torch lighter method. He thought by increasing the temp maybe it would vaporize it all at once but it just filled the bag like cannabis does.

Doesn’t sound very pleasant. I wonder if the DMT vapor aggregates into microscopic particles as it cools. Maybe this explains the harshness?

The GVG is so smooth – first time I used it I thought it wasn’t working. It felt like I was inhaling warm air. No taste or smell, and especially no harshness.

i def think this is the case. i can notice a big difference in the harshness just using a bong were the vapor gets to cool a bit. its very harsh and i end up coughing stuff out of my lungs the next day. that never happens unless the vapor is allowed to cool.

dmt should taste, smell and feel very smooth when done correctly ive learned. if its super harsh to me that says something in the method isnt optimum.

Unless you use DMT very regularly i think a regular pipe is the best way to go, the volcano is very good i just wouldn't want to regularly risk DMT dripping into the volcano itself & it forever tasting like DMT. The biggest negative with the volcano is that you usually have more left to vape afterwards, which isn't necessarily bad, but getting an exact dosage amount is almost impossible as even if you make a huge bag to get all the spice in there, you maybe can't get it all in your lungs in one go without being blasted into hyperspace unable to finish the bag, with a pipe you can finish the bowl & be sure you inhaled all of it.

If you don't like smoke & have to vape then i think the GVG has been recommended many times for very good reason, vapor is easier on your lungs & you can 100% finish off your dose easily. I'd love a GVG solely for spice but its a bit expensive with christmas coming up soon...

^ I have to disagree about the Volcano downsides, you should always use the liquid filter and be prepared to change the bag because it does stink after use...get multiple sets if pos, bare in mind CVG has limited cleaning options... there should be no risk of dripping into volcano with the liquid filter. The part about dosage in the bag doesn't resonate with my experience, you can put a lot into a small bag and it's not difficult to finish a bag in multiple vapes, the fact that you have to complete the bag to complete your dose simplifies things when all is going crazy... SWIM has used the CVG but finds it difficult to master technique, but no difference in taste/smoothness... volcano has been super smooth... this harshness being described sounds more like impurities, is physics envy's product clean? perhaps you are vaping harsh impurities.

Just to clarify, several people have may have mis-read my post. The vapor is NOT harsh...it just TASTES horrible. SWIM is looking for ways to make it TASTE better because he loves the method (for lower doses anyhow), but the taste makes him forgo the Volcano for a while after a couple of uses. The taste with his normal method of smoking (ash/spice/leaf) is just fine. There is something about the Volcano that gives it a nasty flavor/feel. Perhaps it's the liquid pad? Or maybe the 'aggregate cooling'? He has not tried a leaf/spice/leaf method this way. He noticed the taste 'seems' to get worse the longer the vapor is in the bag, or maybe it gets progressively worse once the aftertaste of the first draw begins. On the upside, it is SO SO nice to be able to use the bag when your depth perception is gone and lighters feel dangerous.

SWIM does use spice a couple times per week and is contemplating the purchase of a GVG, but wanted to give the Volcano another go first. He is now more seriously considering it ;-)

TECHNIQUE QUESTION: For those experienced with the liquid pad...do you remove the bottom screen? Do you put the spice on the bottom of the pad and melt it in first? SWIM just re-read the online manual for using the pad and they show it that way...didn't realize this previously. SWIM has been leaving the screen in to help catch any running liquid, and the spice was placed on top of the pad. Thanks...

Thanks for all the replies and tips on using the Volcano in general. I haven't found many previous threads with much 'experienced' information, so it's nice to hear what others have to say.
