Hello there,
So I just performed Vovin's Tek and did the carbonate wash and everything. However, I just added straight-up solid NaOH into the boiled down and defatted MHRB filtrate. My pH meter only showed a pH of about 12 or so, so I kept adding more, but the pH showed to be the same on the meter. I'm worried that I added too much base.
I still performed the carbonate wash and left the resultant naphtha in a baking dish with a paper towel rubber-banded to it and set that outside inside of a semi-ventilated covered BBQ grill. When I checked up on it, I had solid crystals forming, probably as a result from the evaporation, but also from the constant fluctuations in temperatures through the many days and nights. These crystals were clear, but oh so slightly opaque as the shards layered on the crystal formations. So basically, I got some crystals the size of half of a jelly belly on my first naphtha pull.
However, there was a tiny bit of red liquid at the bottom of the dish when I scooped up those crystals.
When I tried smoking it in a freebase pipe, it was somewhat harsh! And I didn't smoke enough, but it sure did work! I only got to the pattern stage though and I was still aware of my room. I just couldn't get myself to smoke more. (ugh) And when I put it on my tongue, it was like licking a battery!
What are the chances that my freebase DMT still has lye in it? I mean, is it supposed to sting when you put some on your tongue? And I've heard people say that DMT should not be harsh at all. Is it possible that the lye may have crystalized with the DMT? Or could it be that I'm smoking it wrong?

They look great tbh, and if you did a carbonate wash you should be good to go. I echo the comments about technique - that is probably why it tastes / feels harsh...
