Just stumbled upon this on the net:
Tannic acid, which precipitates most alkaloids, as well as some other similar substances, as white or yellowish, flocculent compounds. They are often soluble in excess of the precipitant or in other acids.
Tannic acid is sometimes given as an antidote in cases of poisoning by alkaloids, with the object of rendering insoluble such alkaloids as may still be in the stomach; it is also used as an antidote in cases of antimonial poisoning.
Less complex substances, such as quinine hydnochloride
and other alkaloids, give a white pnecipitate with tannic acid.
Could this me used to precipitate out dmt or other alkaloids? I have heard that mimosa contains tannic acid. Is this actually proven?Soluble in water, ethanol, acetone. Insoluble in benzene, chloroform, ether, carbon disulfide. Gives precipitates with most metal salts, proteins and alkaloids.
