filtering dirty DMT

i have about 500mg of dirty DMT i would like to clean up. i was thinking a simple re-X but was going to dissolve the DMT, then filter through some Qualitative filter paper to filter out any chunks in the solution.

i have a couple of questions regarding this.

1. is it even safe to use naphtha through filter paper? will the paper degrade or is there anything like that i should know about?

2. i am assuming the filter paper will not filter any of the DMT as it is dissolved into a solution.
bonus question.. if so, is that also true for any solution?

3. are there any other flaws to this method that i have not thought of?

Well, the filter paper will absorb some of your concentrated DMT juice, which will be wasted. What chunks will you be filtering out? Did you get a load of bark in the naphtha? The paper will only filter out insoluble particles, not dissolved molecules. It would not be of any use cleaning the DMT in the sense of removing impurities.

I think it's safe to filter a naphtha solution, the cellulose should not dissolve in naphtha and in any case it's not anything dangerous.

There might be some losses like bismillah mentioned, it depends on how concentrated the solution is. but you can minimize that by first wetting the filter with naphtha and then after the filtration rinsing it with a bit of warm naphtha

i am not really sure what is in it to be honest. definitely no bark or soup, my guess is probably the odd dust particle or something that got into the naphtha solution before crystallization. or it could even be that it is just particularly gunky DMT that is fine to smoke.
basically it is all the stuff that has come out questionable from my first few extractions, all combined into one pile. just a few gunky, earwax looking blobs really.

i am okay losing a little DMT. great ideas about pre-soaking and rinsing the filter, thank you.

perhaps i would be better off learning a proper cleaning method that will also properly filter impurities. i should learn that anyway and it would kill two birds with one stone (i dont know why i say that, i love birds).
my motivation for this thinking is because i did a re-X on a blob once and it turned out to be a small hair that had gotten into the naphtha and formed crystals on its surface. i thought this would be a quick and simple solution using things i already have, but the truth is i do not know for sure what the contaminations are.

can anybody suggest a simple purifying method?
i have seen one involving activated charcoal and baggies, but i will need to get some activated charcoal. maybe there is a method that will be simpler for me though. i will dig through the wiki and duckduckgo and see what i can find.

i have been looking at the activated charcoal method and it seems it is often responsible for high losses. so i think i will try running a naphtha solution through a filter first, then if that is not enough i will use activated charcoal.
i dont mind yellow DMT so hopefully that should be enough on its own.

in a typical dmt extraction we use the naphtha to pull the DMT and we assume that whatever comes with it are goodies and when done properly the product is safe, so the baddies are insoluble in naphtha.

for your case the simple dmt filtration will get rid of any insoluble baddies, if after filtration you get a clean clear naphtha solution(when warm), no separate layers or other weird stuff.. it should be good. you might still get a waxy gooey dmt at the end but that is fine. you can always re-X to get a prettier product knowing it is clean.

another purifying method would be a carefully done mini A/B. dissolve in acid, base and pull again keeping volumes small. there is a risk of an emulsion here (like in regular A/B) which is annoying and may result in product loss due to frustration.

i'd go with the simple filtration, nothing to lose here, keep the filter and all and if if something is lost you know it is in the filter, and can simply get it out by washing with warm naphtha or alcohol

Hello my friend, a pic would help.
If you got some yellow, brownish goo it should be okay, even very clean crystalls start to get orange when they fold in on each other during compression.
Some people, including swim would say that this is the stuff you wanna have, becasue these plant-oils give the experience a paticular nature.
If you dont like this you can disolve the spice in Naptha again and then put it in the freezer to crystallize again to clean it up.

Just use enaugh Naptha to redisolve the spice not more or you will loose material because of laking saturation (some people preheat the naptha for further saving of material. be carefull its flamable!)

i will try to get a picture soon, but to be honest i dont think it is really that "dirty" if at all, i just want to be sure it is cleaned up because most of it is from early extractions i did while i was learning. i think it is mostly smokable goo.

sounds like the simple filtration and naphtha should be enough to settle my mind. i will see what i am left with and go from there.

i forgot to take a picture :thumb_dow
but i went ahead and used naphtha and a filter.
pre clean weigh in was only ~300mg so i just went for it for experimental purposes. i did not bother pre soaking the filter or rinsing it afterwards just to see what would happen.
there was a clear loss in volume because it was such a small amount of naphtha so i had a laugh to myself and evaporated what was left.

final weigh in was slightly under 100mg but i learnt from it and 100mg of useable crystals is better than 300mg of crystals and unknown extras, even though those extras were probably fine
