First extraction - Lazyman's Tek - need help

I got some MHRB on Monday and did the Lazyman's Tek, hoping to come up with some smokeable material by later that evening, as the tek says you're supposed to.

Did the extraction in a large metal bowl, 1 pound MHRB mixed with ~200g lye and 2L of water, slowly mixed for about 2.5 hours. After that I added 400ml of naptha and stirred, did first pull about a half hour to an hour later.

Got as much of the naptha layer as I could without any of the basified root bark, this was my first extraction so I had a little trouble with this part but only got a couple SMALL drops of sludge in it. Set out the pyrex pie pan in front of a fan to dry, looked like there were some good crystals forming but then once it was completely dried.. nothing! A bit of a discolored film on it, which I assumed was dmt that hadn't yet dried, but when I tried scraping it up with a blade even a day later, it's still oily and smears around.

The same night, I took some more of the naptha that had separated and put it into a mason jar and stuck in the freezer. The next morning, I got excited because there were a couple floating crystals in the naptha, as well as crystals on the side. Took it out to dry and they melted, not even hardly any film on the glass. It's been out since and doesn't look like there is anything in the jar.

Monday I rolled a bowl of weed around in the pyrex dish, after it was dried but still oily. Smoked it and definitely felt a strong head change, but nothing close to tripping.

So I'm really just stumped now, have been reading as much as I can about it but haven't had any luck finding answers. It seems other people have had problems with not being left with anything after evaporation, or getting crystals with freeze precip that soon melt away. But I can't find the solution, or cause.

Any help would be appreciated!

Also, notice that oil quantity is misleading, often small amount of oil weigh a lot as opposed to what it looks like when in crystals.

I would redissolve in small amounts of warm solvent and refreeze, and harvest as in link above. And do pulls with a lot of cycles of mixing/letting stand

I'm not a seasoned vet at this yet, but I'll tell ya this: patience pays!

I tried to hurry along too and got impatient because I was seeing results, then watching the results melt before my eyes.

Something told me I was going too fast.

I started over, not throwing anything away. I changed from a plastic milk jug to a big glass jar. I only started out with 100g of pre powdered bark...

I hammered more lye into the jar to boost back up pH levels and used the same solvent from the first failed test plus some new solvent.

I checked last night and it was YELLOW.... Like gatorade. Check my post below in the "I think I wasted 400g of bark" thread.

I spent more time evapping with a fan to reduce, then into the freezer at -10 for 24 hours.

What I see today looks like well over a gram of sweet sweet goodies, white as sugar! I'll post pics tonight once I get it together...

I couldn't be more thrilled with my first extraction. Don't give up. Go with your intuition. Chances are something as simple as not evapping, not high enough ph, not enough time for solvent to pull up the dmt, or not a cold enough freezer is the problem. "set it and forget it" don't touch, don't look!

Advise is this: take TIME. It's not even measurements that will help you the most, the only thing I knew for sure was that I had 100g of bark. After losing my first pull to melting I put away the teks and just took time on my own to try and I'm so glad I did.

Thanks for the links to the FAQs, endlessness. I had already read it yesterday but I'm not sure how much of it I can use for my current situation.

I'll go with your recommendation of adding small amounts of warm solvent (how much would you recommend?) to the jar that had some crystals but dried to nothing after I took it out. Not sure how much solvent was in there to begin with, maybe an inch to inch and a half in a pint mason jar. Also to warm it can I just put in a water bath of hot tap water?

As for the pint jar maybe 1/3 full that's been in my freezer for the past day, and also had the naptha from first jar added to it, what do I want to do with it? I'm seeing some very small specks in the mix but nothing like crystals, not even what I got in the other jar. What would you recommend with this jar?

Also thank you Ezekiel, I have a feeling I might have rushed something somewhere along the line, but I did follow the tek exactly and did not rush it more than it says to.

Re-use your solvent again... It wont hurt anything, the worst that can happen is it won't absorb anything else into it.

When I combined my pint jar with new solvent and agitated it once into my mix I noticed the next day it was way different than the first time.

I'm not using a tek from here on out... My dish I pulled from the freezer a bit ago is friggin perfect. Its drying with no melting and no loss of product.

I didn't do any warm solvent or anything.

I honestly think it'll let you know when its done. You need to let that mixture sit and get good after you put the lye in, for at least a day. I did 2 days and I'm seeing the results I would have if I'd started out that way.

Don't lose hope! I was so discouraged and it turned right around.

Good news, at least I hope.

I added the rest of my pound of lye (254g), making it a total of 454g in the mixture. Put it in a water bath, the hottest my tap will get.. too hot to touch comfortably for long.

Threw in both jars of naptha I had precipitating in my freezer, stirred for an hour or so, gave another water bath and stirred very heavily. Took off about all the naptha layer I could and to my surprise, it's a yellow/gold piss colored mixture.

From what I've read, this isn't too uncommon and can be seen more when using heated solvent. Either way it looks better than nothing, starting to feel a little more optimistic about this.

When I did my first pull (when my stuff was in separate pint jars) the naphtha was still pretty clear, no cloud at all and a faint tinge of yellow color.

When I added more lye to get the saturation started again it made everything warm so I recycled ALL the naphtha from the first time and a little extra new, I think this eliminates the need for a heated naphtha pull myself, but people stick to what they like.

It sounds like you and me had the same problem with our naphtha just not being saturated enough to pull anything out...

So far after the first evap I got 320mg of spice. The 2nd pull comes out tomorrow and I SWEAR by the time I get done with the 4th pull I will have netted over a gram off this 100g pre-powdered mexican bark!

Think of this like your baby...love it and shape it and watch the motherfucka grow! :d I'm glad it worked out for you buddy, you're going to have a good yield! Just make sure you totally evap your end product and get let it dry so you can scrape all the ear-waxy goodness up as well, it chops up into a different grade real nice!

Just woke up to some fine looking crystals in the jar. Looks similar to "sugar in the raw" (turbinado sugar) in the bottom. Reading into it now and making sure I'm good to toss the naptha back into my mix, and then evap the crystals. Hopefully they won't melt this time, but they look much more like crystals than what I had before!

Thanks a lot for your help Ezekiel, I just realized that I was reading some of your old posts the other day while searching for a solution. You're the guy with three different jars freeze preciping, and then you combined them at the advice of someone else on here right? Good to see yours turned out well too.

I'll keep you all updated and hopefully have a weighed amount for my first pull soon!

The big jar is the way to go. Even with little jars you're only saturating so much in them... When I moved to the big one I noticed the difference right away.

A tek is great to get an idea where to start but I think trial and error is even better.

I just did my second pull and wager I got another 320mg at least from it. I won't know till I get to my scale but it looks awesome.

I'm just going to keep recycling my solvent when dumping from the freezer and adding a bit more fresh for my remaining 2-3 pulls and it should be gravy from here out. As long as we're giving our mix time to pull the goodies into the solvent and the pH is high enough, we're in business my friend.

Don't worry when your evapped spice gets a little waxy when you razor it. I use a nickel to scrape my blade if it starts sticking. You'll have small pools of solvent until it dries to ear wax then you can chop it.
