First post, first extraction, first week off

I've been lurking for a while and decided today is the day to post. My boss got mad at me this morning and gave me a week off, so I decided to try my very first DMT extraction. I have read tons of teks and understand why each thing is done, but I've never done it. I'm an incurable experimenter and very rarely follow directions lol. I have 500 grams of powdered root bark to play with, so I'm playing! I would rather take what I know and try to apply it without step by step directions, even if that means failure because that way I learn even more and I crave that as much as I do the target compound. I will take some pics later and as things progress and post them just because. Not like I can really add anything, but threads with pics are just sooo much better.

I started off with 300ml of dH2O basified to ph 13 (accidentally overshot, was going for 12) with NaOH. I then added 47 gms of powdered root bark. Woulda been 50, but I forgot to tare the baggie weight, doh! Btw, I did all this in a 1 quart mason jar. I didn't have a lid for the jar but I did have the band. I just placed a doubled up ziplock bag over the opening and screwed on the band and it works fine. From what I've read NaOH will not break down polyethylene. I added approximately a half inch layer of naptha to that and gently rolled and shook it for several minutes. I have sitting up somewhere now, but will periodically mix over the next day or two.

When finished I will use my sep funnel or another baggie to seperate the layers then evaporate my naptha. I am considering salting the spice out of the naptha but that depends on my mood when the time comes.

You may pull a lot of plant oils letting the naphtha sit for that long, so a re-salting may be inevitable. I haven't let naphtha sit for that long myself but I gather that can happen from others who have. Experimentation!

I noticed the naptha getting cloudy already so I pulled it after reading your post lol. I added fresh to it and will pull that off tonight. it way darker than I thought it would be. Here's the first naptha.

Okay, I'm still trying to find the best size to make these pics for posting here, so bear with me.

I ended up using a sep funnel for the second pull. I have both extracts of the naptha in a shallow dish in a dessicator bag. Wonder how long it will take to dry, anyone? I'm also including a pic of a small spill I had with the first pull. Ridiculous chalky white stuff!

I'm not sure what you mean with this sentence. Is the person visible in the pictures or is there a name visible in the pictures?

All the jpg pictures uploaded to the DMT-nexus are stripped of their EXIF header (which can contain information about the location where the picture was taken amongst others) before being stored.


To the OP, the naphta you pulled is extremely dark. Maybe it's the lighting but I would recommend a recrystalization for sure when you are done.

I will be messing around with basing/salting what I have today. I tried to smoke some and it's nasty lol. It tastes like it should, I just can't hold it down. I still have plenty of bark to play with and will try again. I'm not in the best situation to experiment right now since I live with other people, but I'll be moving soon.

After I freeze precipitated my naptha I was left with naptha of the color I see in the pics around here. I'm sure there is still some in there and probably pretty clean.

Yeah, I don't get the pic thing either. Maybe I'm missing something. Rabbit, please explain.

Quick update and a question;

After reading some other threads by first timers I have concluded that using the powdered bark is one reason why my naptha got so dark so quick. I have also came to realize that a carbonate wash would have served me well. Not knowing any of that at the time I took a different approach. First let me say that I had written off the extracted material and considered it a 100% loss already. So, I didn't feel I had anything to lose by experimenting. I gathered up as much of this material as I could from my evaporation dish and put it in a test tube. I added some strongly basic water (ph 13), put my rubber gloved thumb over the end and shook the living crap out of it. All the dust and all those little globs congealed in to what looked like a dirty piece of brown bubble gum. I then decanted off most of the water and added some strongly acidic water (ph 3), then shook again. After quite a bit of shaking the glob came back apart and after a few minutes I reasoned that the good stuff was in solution and what I had left floating around was probably trash. I poured the liquid through a coffee filter in my evaporation dish. What was left in the filter was brown and waxy. The water, now in the dish, looked extremely clear, not cloudy in the least. I sat the dish aside, out of sight, and forgot about it (literally). I remembered it today and looked to see if the liquid had evaporated yet. I was surprised to see that it had not yet evaporated and the water now has a purple tint to it. Can I assume that it did indeed have dmt in it? Why did it turn purple?

Btw, I did manage a few milligrams of some crystalline substance. Like I said, it's purple, but I do have some crystal of some kind lol. I have no plan to ingest said substance. At this point it's merely a curiosity.

Any ideas on what I have here?

SWIM would recommend a recrystallization for sure, you might be able to pull something out of it.
