First STB procedure

So Ill have all of the reagants for it in the next two days, and im plotting out procedure.


-500 ml of spring water(550-575ml if prepowdered)
-50 grams of NaOH
-50 grams of MHRB
-40 ml of naptha


After mixing, ill have the jars sitting in a rubbermaid halfway filled with water, with an aquarium heater set to the max temperature. I got this idea from the hot water bath idea, but i dont want to occupy a bathtub that long.


Ill let it sit for about 24 hours, then remove naptha layer with a metal/high density plastic flavor injector.

Then ill evaporate the naptha a little, then freeze precip.


Does this sound like a good plan? Am I missing anything?

Well, I'd probably use more naptha, around 75-100ml

Also, instead of evaporating the naptha I'd use freeze precipitation

Here are some suggestions... If bark is pre-powdered, SWIM would use a bit more water, for your case about 550-575ml total. Would use distilled water too, but don't see why spring water wouldn't work. 30 ml of naptha is good, but if SWIY has never pulled before, you might want to add about another 10 ml to make it easier on you. Make sure to get only the top layer, not the red basified layer beneath. You can evaporate to get your product if you want, but SWIM recommends freeze precipitation, it results in a much cleaner product. Also, you want to do another 3 pulls after you pull your initial 30-40 ml of naptha. Since SWIY is doing an extraction around the same size that SWIM normally does, put all 4 of your pulls in the same collection jar or tray. Evap that in front of a fan until you see the naptha start to get cloudy, or when you've evaporated about 50% of your solvent, then put in the freezer.

And make sure not to heat your lye/bark solution too much, if you get it too hot you'll evaporate all the spice.

SWIM suggests to start off with only one container, until SWIY gets their extractions down. One extraction done right on 50 grams will get somebody plenty of hyperspace vacations.

Can the container of naptha in the feeezer be capped?

It should be capped. You don't want your freezer smelling like solvent!
