Art can be a way to help us see past the mass hallucination of imaginary social constructs such as money.

However, there can be very thick walls around a conditioned mind:

"Some art-market watchers have suggested the work – which shows a girl reaching toward a heart-shaped balloon – could be worth even more in its shredded state."

That's a nice stunt.

I'm trying to imagine the look on the onlookers' faces watching the confetti fluttering out had there been a cross-cut shredder in the frame.

But... Banksy, you disappoint me here  (OK, maybe you didn't want to get sued... but not wanting to get sued is also selling out 😁 )

The website MyArtBroker.com, which resells Banksy pieces, said Girl with Balloon had enjoyed annual increases in value of about 20% in recent years. “Prices now are regularly exceeding £115,000 for signed authenticated prints,” said its co-founder Joey Syer.

“The auction result will only propel this further and given the media attention this stunt has received, the lucky buyer would see a great return on the £1.02m they paid last night.

“This is now part of art history in its shredded state and we’d estimate Banksy has added at a minimum 50% to its value, possibly as high as being worth £2m plus.”

Will they never learn?

Next time, use nitrocellulose-impregnated canvas. Let's see if someone will pay £5m for a pile of ashes. If it's good enough for cricket, it's good enough for art.

Auto-Destruct Art has a long history (back to WWII). Lots of great work has been commemorated through destruction. My favorite is Rauchenberg's erasure of DeKooning's drawing.
