Grinding Bark

Migrated topic.

Hello nexus,

I need a method of grinding my bark to powder (or very small) without the aid of a coffee grinder or such. Any solution/workaround would be greatly appreciated,

Thank you

SWIM doesn't like to order from outside of the country or paying extra to have it ground; plus the prepowdered is more susceptible to oxidization, or so I've heard.
Yeah that makes perfect sense and does not bode too well for all the STB people.

There's nothing difficult about this blender method, though breaking it up by hand to prepare it for the blender is a little tough...builds character, gives ya shaman-hands.
If you're not scratched and bleeding you havent worked hard enough for your spice. I've always seen buying powdered bark as a total cop out but to be honest swim would have bought said bark if he could a few months back. These days he prefers a walk through the bush :)

I have always had best results going dry. When I tried freezing it would go warm to quickly because of the friction. I went from garden shredder -> blender -> coffee grinder -> flour sieve -> coffee grinder

From my experience slightly shredded bark will still work but not as good as powdered or as close to as possible.

Pressure cookers have higher temps and allow you to lyse the cell more which can help in the situation.

In either case I find that it is best to use a flour sieve to seperate the powder from the shredded fibre and cook the fibrous stuff in the pressure cooker.

P.S. I go from blender on 1 minute then put all of that into a coffee grinder for 30 seconds and you end up in the clear, make sure you have good blenders and grinders though because they can go out the window quick!

I found this type of grinder on Vevor.com Looks pretty heavy duty. It's a little over $100, but I'm sure it would last a lot longer than a blender and a coffee grinder.

I couldn't figure out how to post a pic, but here's a link: https://www.vevor.com/electric-grai...-coffee-corn-pepper-swing-type-p_010326769844

Looks promising. did you buy that? would be nice if you report back if you tried it.

Btw, the link you posted doesn't work.

I have not tried it. I just saw this thread and it reminded me of the wide variety of tools Vevor offers at affordable prices. I bought a pottery wheel from them for $220 last X-mas and it's not a professional quality wheel, but it's darn good for the price. I don't have any use for commercial kitchen equipment, but I enjoy browsing the stuff they sell. Do you need a soft-serve ice cream machine, or how about a doughnut machine?
So, after seeing the DIY blender/grinder posted here I went to the Vevor site and searched for "grinder" and found these. I figured somebody here might like to know about them. Hopefully, if anyone gets one they'll let us know how they like it.

Swim has tested the appliance, he has the 3000 watt version.
He said that for 200gr chips (max 2 cm x 5 cm) the appliance needs 2x 60 seconds with a cooling time of approx. 5-10 minutes in between.
Twice is necessary, otherwise the appliance heats up too much.
The appliance is completely sealed and no dust can escape.

I use one of these to grind my material. Very important to note there is no safety function - meaning when you remove the lid to add material, it can start running if you bump the power dial and you could seriously injure yourself.. this is a serious blade with a lot of power so we are talking horrendous life changing injuries here. For this reason I can’t feel right recommending this, despite working otherwise very well. They should have included a safety function that stops it from running when the lid is removed. This is basic stuff that I’m surprised they didn’t include..

If you get one of these, then always unplug the appliance before loading it with material. Then screw on the lid and plug it in again before running.

That sounds quite dangerous. I went back to the Vevor link and read that all their grinders have safety switches built into the lid latches, so they can't run without the lid latched in place.

I also noticed that their large 2500g grinders are too powerful for common household circuits and will trip 20-amp breakers. I doubt many folks need to grind 2500g of bark, but I thought I'd point that out.

There is a safety switch on the lid.
It does not function without the lid.

Nevertheless, you should always unplug the appliance before opening it!

I can assure you mine runs without the lid attached and has since I got it. I got mine off the Australian vevor.. maybe there are slight differences. But it says on the site that it doesn’t run without the lid on the oz one too. So maybe they are selling a newer model or maybe mine is faulty. But I can see no evidence of said safety function on mine. I only got it a year ago. See vid below..

So check that the function works when you get it. It’s incredibly dangerous loading it you leave it plugged in otherwise

Update: I checked my receipt and I confused this purchase with another vevor order. I got mine from eBay.. so its probably a cheaper knockoff. I guess be sure to check its listed as having the safety option and check the appliance when you receive it.
