How am I doing?

Hello, I am new to this forum, and have been working on my first extraction. I will write what I have done, and any input is appreciated.

- I started off with 56 Grams of Mimosa Hostilis.

- I used a ratio of - 20G Mimosa Hostilis: 5G Sodium hydroxide (Red Devil 100% Lye): 200 mL Distilled White Vinegar.

- I used three separate mason jars.

- In two of the jars I added 200mL Distilled White Vinegar, and 5g Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH), Shook until it was dissolved, and once it was dissolved I added 20 Grams of powdered MHRB (Mimosa Hostilis Root Bark).

- In the third Jar (Because I had 56 G Mimosa) I did the same thing as above with a different ratio; 16G Mimosa Hostilis: 4G Sodium hydroxide: 150 mL Distilled White Vinegar.

- I let the mixture sit overnight

- To two of the mason jars I added 50 mL Naphtha, and slightly less then 50 mL to the third jar containing less Mimosa, Id say approx. 45 mL.

- DMT Shuffle, This is where I vigorously shook each one of the jars for a minute, and afterwards put them in a water bath at 60C/140F degree's.

- After a few hours there was a clear partition between the sodium hydroxide, and naphtha. The naphtha being on top. I allowed the three mason jars to cool completely.

- I removed the top layer of Naphtha using a pipette, and put it into a small mason jar.

Next I will do what I read from 'Marsofold's tek'
"Freeze-precipitation/wash. place the sealed mason jar in a FREEZER for 3 days to precipitate the crystals. Prepare a filter setup by placing a funnel into a quart mason jar and putting a small coffee filter paper into the funnel.
Shake the naptha in the mason jar strongly to stir up all the crystals at the bottom and quickly pour while still very cold into the funnel for filtering.
Impure yellow-white DMT crystals will be seen on the coffee filter paper. Allow the crystals to completely dry out on the filter paper in the funnel."

I just put it in the freezer today, so now I wait for three days. Afterwards, I re-add the remaining naphtha to each one of the jars, making up the volume of fresh Naphtha if necessary, and repeat my procedure at the DMT Shuffle Part up to three times. Correct?

How am I doing so far? and what can I expect in terms of yield?

It seems that you are getting confused with some aspects of the extraction.

You added lye directly to the vinegar before adding the root bark? That isn't going to do anything but raise the PH of the vinegar.

You really need to re-read a few extraction Teks before proceeding any further.


Let me narrow things down for you real quick.

You've basically got two main kinds of extractions for spice with spinoffs from those.

First is an A/B also known as an Acid Base. This is where you soak or boil your rootbark in acidic water to convert the dmt-tannates to dmt-salts. You then filter this liquid and base it with lye to convert your dmt to freebase so that the naptha can soak them up.

The second is a STB also known as Strait to Base. This is where you'll add equal parts of lye and rootbark so that the lye can break down the plant matter and release the dmt so it can then be dissolved into the naptha as freebase.

There are several variations and hybrids of these two methods. I suggest studying them a bit more.

I really don't feel like critiquing your extraction because you've made quite a few errors so far due to lack of proper research. Not trying to come down on you, just saying.

This is the first extraction I did when I joined. I suggest reading it several times before proceeding any further. It is a pictorial of Noman's Tek. I suggest reading that tek several times before proceeding as well.

As far as saving what you've done so far, use a funnel and pour all of your mason jars of mimosa tea into one HDPE gallon jug and add more lye until everything turns black.

Be VERY careful when doing this because I'm not sure how caustic your solution is so far. You do not want to get any of the lye or solution on you or in your eyes. Wear gloves and safety glasses.

You might be able to salvage something from your extraction but I highly recommend checking out the links I provided before continuing any further.

Then the root bark sat overnight, wouldn't that also raise the PH of the root bark as well?
Im going to try and figure out how to attach files to post the guide that I was going by.
I thought I followed it quite well..

I will definitely take a look at those two guides and read them thoroughly.

What color was the mimosa mix when you added the lye? Did it turn completely black? If so, you're good.

I would do more than just 3 naphtha pulls on the jars.. I would do maybe 5, and warm the last two in water bath.

Also no need to wait 3 days for freezing, 12 hours is already enough. Just dont throw the used naphtha away after retrieving crystals. Either reuse it for more pulls and/or after you made all your pulls, evap all the used naphtha till its nearly nothing left and stick in the freezer again.

Yield with good mimosa should be around 1%.

Yes it was completely black. Also take a look at the file I attached.

And okay I will do five pulls, and what you said with the water bath.

So After 12 hours, take the cold jar out of the freezer, and pour into the funnel for filtering?

well heres the thing.. Ive had that scraping and pouring into funnel thing work out good a few times.. Then I had sometimes the crystals melt into the funnel as they dried.. If that happens, use a bit of warm naphtha to redissolve and into the freezer again. Our FAQ, question 4.17, gives another idea how to retrieve crystals after freezing. Tell us whichever you tried and if it worked good.

I will take a look at the other methods to retrieve the crystals, but which one from your experience do you think is easiest? Also I'm not sure I understand what you mean, what should I do if the crystals melt into the funnel as they dry?

The Naphtha with the crystals in it (what I have in the freezer) should be pretty clear, right?

They dont melt into the funnel, they might melt into the coffee paper filter on top of the funnel (hopefully you are gonna use a filter). If that happens, as I said, warm up some naphtha and soak the filter in it and evap/freeze the naphtha to get crystals back again. Im not sure what is easiest, both are pretty easy. Maybe try the FAQ one.. Or whatever you feel more confident with

Yeah whuuuuuuut are you adding lye to vinegar for. Sounds like you've confused vinegar with water. You're supposed to basify a mixture of rootbark and WATER not rootbark and VINEGAR. But it may have still worked anyway, good luck
