When I first heard of DMT, I heard of how extremely cost effective it was to make it. But after looking at the prices of MHRB and learning that the product you get is only 1-2% of the total grams of MHRB used in the process, it seems like you would be better off just buying DMT outright (joking).

Have you made it or tried it? From my number crunching ( I have not made my own yet) but if you only get like 1-2% that can still be a lot. For example if you get 100g of mhrb that isn’t that expensive considering if you get 1-2 grams of dmt. Isn’t it like 30-50mg of dmt is a break through dose? So that’s like 20 break through doses. Seems cost effective to me. Maybe I’m missing something I’m a nooby.

Extracting your own spice will always be better than procuring it in other ways. Even though it might become a bit more expensive at some point, there are a few crucial benefits of doing so which vastly outweigh the additional costs. Benefits such as creating a sacred connection between you and the molecule during the extraction process - a phenomenon that has been anecdotally reported by many, and is also present in different circumstances, such as growing one's own mushrooms, Salvia, cacti, etc.
Another massive benefit is that you know exactly what's in your spice, and you can guarantee its purity because you have extracted it yourself. Considering safety is basically the most important thing we try to focus on here at the Nexus, consuming pure and unspiked DMT climbs pretty high in the list and makes the process of extraction that much more valuable.
The good thing is, you don't need to be afraid of the apparent complexity of the process, because over the years a bunch of amazing people have procured and refined a large amount of resources that can walk you through the extraction step by step with very satisfactory results. If even folks like me who are quite inept when it comes to organic chemistry can do it, anyone can.

For what it's worth, anytime I've seen DMT for sale it's been quite expensive. It's also been a gooey red stuff which was hard to break through on (Jungle Spice?).
So, from what I've seen it's cost effective, but even if it costs the same you know what you are getting. You can have both pure white powder and gooey stuff with it's own advantages.

There was a recent report out of Germany I believe which claimed that 5 individuals had been hospitalized after ingesting 5-meo-dmt carts produced and sold from a Mexican website. Bear in mind you're essentially handing your wellfare over to a complete stranger you may never even meet who's soul purpose tends to be making money.
Sourcing the spice is highly frowned upon for a number of reasons from undue attention on the buyer, increased health risks, and a total lack of transparency.
You are almost always better off learning to extract the spice yourself.
This is a real "teach a man to fish" type affair here.
Best of luck, be safe, if you're going to consider using product from a stranger you should at minimum have someone who can get help if anything goes terribly wrong.
Your wellfare supercedes any convenience you may find in buying such products

I think red stuff can have impurities that taste pretty bad.
It have seen the nasty red stuff come through when you overuse lye and use very hot naphtha, what I would call a sloppy extraction. Following a TEK like max ion, with a lower amount of lye and using warm to the touch naphtha gives much cleaner results.
Not all red means impurities. Some kinds or DMT polymorphs can look dark orange/red.
The red impurities from sloppy extractions have a characteristic smell that is unpleasant and different from DMT. They are unpleasant to vaporize also.
