In case you're having trouble finding heptane

Migrated topic.

I've been to countless stores in my area looking for n-heptane for recrystallization including Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Lowes, Dedicated local art stores, etc. It seems that bestine is no longer produced, though it is now sold under the name beacon solvent/thinner. After searching for hours locally I went online and found this website: http://www.misterart.com/adhesives/adhesive-removers/beacon-solvent-thinner.html that sells it. Just thought I'd share in case anyone has had similar trouble finding it.

dow betaclean 3350 is pure heptane so are other panel wipe products. Just look for the respective MSDS online to know before you buy. These products are usually a lot cheaper than art supplies.

In the U.S. we do not have panel wipe. Betaclean looks to be priced in euros too. Looking at the store names OP mentions i know he is located in the U.S.

I cant find a MSDS for beacon solvent/thinner. How do you know its 100% pure?
Here's the MSDS for Bestine: http://archpdfs.lps.org/Chemicals/Solvent-and-Thinner_Bestine.pdf . I've found numerous websites stating beacon was previously sold as bestine: Raw Materials Art Supplies - Downtown Los Angeles also BESTINE Solvent and Thinner ON SALE (see reviews). Also, the label on the container states it contains n-heptane (doesn't list any other ingredients). And I've already used beacon solvent for re-crystallization with good results.

The company that made Bestine went out of business in 2016. IDK, but there is a replacement brand available. I have not been to the art supply store in a while to check (they closed my neighborhood one due to SanFran-style rents!:thumb_dow ), but it seems that the new brand is cheaper online by the quart than bestine was/is.

I plan to play with heptane in an upcoming experiment to see about obtaining fluffy white for once, for kicks n :grin:s.

The original company that made Bestine went out of business, but a company called Speedball is making it now and selling it under the Bestine name. The MSDS lists 100% n-heptane. It is available from amazon.

Hey all...

Bestine is still being produced. I reached out to the company sales rep. They discontinued Bestine in the small bottles (4oz size, iirc) only.

They have a store locator, look up your closest retailer (Micheals included). If they say they don't have any, ask them to order it. Talk to a manager, not floor staff.
