In your opinion -- Can an extraction be too big?

Subject pretty much says it all. I have the hdpe cat litter jugs that are ~2 3/4 gals (11qts) with large mouths and handles.

Besides possibly messing up a step would you forsee any complications in using this

I plan on doing a vinegar soak then a STB naphtha pull.

Thoughts/Suggestions?

Thank you!

About the size of your extraction, please read our Attitude page:

Attitude said:
It is important to understand that large scale extractions are frowned upon at the the DMT-Nexus. The reasons for that are:
  • The primary users of large scale extractions are drugs dealers, something we loath.
  • Having large amounts of a schedule 1 substance in your possession is NOT a good thing if you get caught. You will not only be prosecuted for the schedule 1 substance but also for the intent of distribution.
  • Many small scale extractions will get you acquainted with the extraction procedure.
  • Many small scale extractions will make you understand the workings beind each step of the extraction.
  • Many small scale extractions will not be a big loss if the extraction fails.
  • Many small scale extractions will let you finetune your process.
So as you can see we encourage small scale extractions.

Bigger extractions = Bigger mess.

I'm very reluctant to go over 250g's. The last thing I want is 1kg of bark in a soup with an impossible emulsion sat on the top sticking it's tongue out at me in such an infuriating manner!

i understand the drug dealer remark -- but i literally can't extract the stuff quick enough to give away (i prefer to give experienced friends several trips worth so they can use at their leisure -- i prefer to be alone when I blastoff), space VERY is limited, and i'de like to do a large pull and be done with it for a while.

maybe i will find a smaller container that is larger than a quart jar and start with that. just i was about to recycle that container and when I saw the #2 I figured why not reuse instead of recycle!
i guess my question was more towards the shape of the container but i understand the nexus' concerns!

If you go traditional A/B you can reduce your juice, save significant amounts of space and not have to use huge amounts of base.

With regards to extraction size, I think with some teks the efficiency goes down and the difficulty goes up when working with larger amounts.

I found myself pretty much in the same situation as you... One of my roomate doesn't want me to do the extraction when she's home because of the chemicals, so I ended up doing a big extraction when she went away for a month. I found that doing lots of smaller extractions, all at once, was the way to go (or else it's not as efficient).

I'm not sure how much and how often you are giving your spice away, but please be careful! It doesn't matter whether you give it away OR sell it, you are distributing a schedule I substance. If your friends are really so happy about the spice and like to trip, instead of giving the spice away, teach them how to safety extract themselves. By teaching them you are spreading the knowledge we're attempting to spread here on the Nexus.

If your small scale extractions aren't good enough anymore, you've become a production facility for other people. While many of us here have given spice away to others, it's best to keep this to a minimum. This will also reduce your (potential) exposure to the law. Word will spread that you give away 'drugs', more people will show up and before you know it, law enforcement has an eye on you and BAM. Busted.
