Is recrystallization with ethanol instead of hexane possible?

Hi everyone, as per the title, I was wondering if Rex with ethanol is possible, as I extracted it yesterday, but the hexane I put in the freezer was quite yellowish (even though I was very precise), so I imagine our friend will also be yellowish. Since I'm out of hexane but have ethanol, can I rex with it? Always the same method: a little, hot, and put back in the freezer for a day. I look forward to your valuable advice, thanks!!

No as far as I've seen dmt cannot be re-xed with alcohol.

Try giving your NPS an acid wash, that should clean it but also recover any dmt left in it

Also, yellow isn't in indication of impurity. I think a concentrated solution of DMT is always yellow. Pure molten DMT is yellow. And sometimes yellow solutions grow pure white crystals. Yellow crystals are possible too, 100% pure. Even goo's and oils are apparently high purity DMT. It's a lot more mysterious than I used to think. Idk if anyone completely knows why it can be yellow or how to reverse / prevent it. I've been searching hard for that info

I've no idea if ethanol can be used and I think no one who answered here have a clue, because they didn't try it
in my experience, trace of water during the re-x will goo the thing and turn it yellow, so I personally wouldn't try unless I'd have 99.9% ethanol. you can turn 96% ethanol to 99% with molecular sieves.
maybe get isopropanol 99.9%?
anyway please report back if you actually try it, I'm curious.

you can clean your used hexane with activated carbon then filter it (i've never tried that myself tho)

DMT is way too soluble in ethanol for it to be of any use in recrystallisation. Even aqueous ethanol down to 20% ABV barely works, and either oiling out occurs or the water starts freezing out of the ethanol, possibly both.

Isopropanol would be similarly problematic, although you might just get some luck using a low-% ABV aqueous mixture if you're looking for a direction in which to experiment.

Crystallisation may occur if the solution is allowed to evaporate very slowly in the freezer, but that seems fairly useless if you ask me.

You need non-polar solvent. Ethanol is polar.
Partly. Toluene and xylene are also broadly non-polar (although they have more of a dipole moment than hexane - ignoring p-xylene for a, uh, moment) but they're also useless for DMT recrystallisation. Presumably the enhanced solubility is occurring through π-π interactions in those cases.

Good to know. Thanks
