Is violence ever justified

Migrated topic.
Society is built on individuals cooperating peacefully. Principles of violence are only useful when some members of society want to control others. Principles of violence used to dominate societies until people were recognized as equals in the eyes of the law. We are lucky to have gained such rights lets not lose them.

Violence is only justified in self defense or the defense of others.

To me the term anarchist society is an oxymoron.

That is the idea. Embrace dualism. Read about Taoism and keep anarchy in mind when you do.

Tao Teh Ching by Lao Tzu : 18-

When the great Tao was lost,
There appeared governments and laws.
With intellect and wit,
Came confusion.
When harmony was abandoned,
Then came filial piety.
With many political officials,
Comes oppression and disorder.

^^I recently started studying Taoism, I love it so much. awesome citation coatl!

I agree. It's just that for me the forms of anarchy that I can envisage working (without having to genetically re-engineer humankind to act a bit more civil!) don't seem like true anarchy to me because they still have some semblance of a state, albeit a less centralised one... they seem more like a form of minarchism than anarchism, though they are neither really). When I talk about anarchy I'm talking about the abolition of the state. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Anarchy would end the state, yes. I think it is really difficult for the average Joe to have any sort of view of what an anarchist society would look like. No anarchist has the perfect blueprint, and its bullshit for someone who denounces anarchy to demand one. It is my belief that an anarchist should be reasonable, they should be welcome to steps towards smaller and smaller gov`t.

I am not stubborn, I would be very willing to accept a really limited gov`t as a compromise, as would most anarchists. By being an anarchist, I demand the least amount of government that is possible. It has nothing to do with a radical belief system.

What a wonderful post for my 777th! Maybe it's an omen.

What a wonderful post indeed, a fantastic contribution to this thread. Thank you for bringing all that information to the table.

I feel the only one time violence is necessary is when someone has tried to harm you and you are unable to talk them out of the situation or have not been able to run away from the conflict. Then as a last resort, defend yourself but only as much as you need to to be able to run away from danger. Violence in any other context is not productive and only harmful to ourselves and our environment. The world does not need any more violence towards people, animals and our earth, than what already goes on every day. :(

Much Peace
