This is a recent conversion from fumarates back to freebase with standard room temp naphtha pulls. Quite happy with the big cluster! Most of it formed at room temperature after some evaporation of the very clear naphtha.

What substance is that?

A certain substituted beta-nitrostyrene, I developed some new reaction conditions with the goal of improving yield and reducing the use of excess reagents, after warming slightly, leaving the reaction at room temperature over the weekend gave these results as a great success. Crystallization seeded on the stirbar. It does look like quartz. I've never seen a nitrostyrene crystal this big, hell, i've never seen crystals of any organic molecule this big. Dense and heavy as well, The crystals in the tray weighed 14.5g, the large one weighed 1.26g. 6cm length, 1cm wide, just under 0.5cm thick. Wow.

I just got promoted yay, and THIS is the thread i've been excited to participate in because I do photography, so here's pics of my recent snow globes. Nothing big, but my next step is to do some re-x and grow big ones.

I have a question about re-x (i'll be using naptha): for big crystals should I freeze precipitate or do a slow room temp evap? I've seen both suggested. I'm planning on the slow evap but let me know if you think freeze precip is better.

Gorgeous work PS--

Slow evap will always make the densest, largest crystals-- the colder it is the liklier it is to crash out in multiple places making each one smaller, but I've made 1/2" glass shards before with room-temp evap using heptane-- took about a month but they were HUGE.

I've been busy but I finally tried my first re-x. It didn't go very well though. I added warm naptha to a quantity of dmt dropwise while stirring gently, and eventually everything dissolved.

At that point though I expected to see separation of goo at the bottom but there was none, it was just a clear liquid. I let it sit for a while in a heat bath but no separation occured. So I didn't decant anything and just poured it all into my crystallization vessel. That vessel was room temp and the liquid immediately went cloudy. I put it in a safe place and in a few hours it had already formed big sea urchin crystals, but I left it to fully evap which took 4 or 5 days.

In the result I can see the orange goo I should have removed beneath a layer of sea urchins.

Nonetheless I took a few pics of the crystals that had developed well so here you go.

Also an ant got into the dish and died in there. RIP, I hope you went out with beautiful visions and not suffocating from naptha.
