A certain substituted beta-nitrostyrene, I developed some new reaction conditions with the goal of improving yield and reducing the use of excess reagents, after warming slightly, leaving the reaction at room temperature over the weekend gave these results as a great success. Crystallization seeded on the stirbar. It does look like quartz. I've never seen a nitrostyrene crystal this big, hell, i've never seen crystals of any organic molecule this big. Dense and heavy as well, The crystals in the tray weighed 14.5g, the large one weighed 1.26g. 6cm length, 1cm wide, just under 0.5cm thick. Wow.
