Hi all just checking in for the first time.
I have been cooking some A. Acuminata and following a pdf I got my hands on that uses phosphoric acid.
3 acid cooks then NaOH really strong probably way too strong (I now have a pH meter so I will adjust that properly next time).
After finding this resource I have added the salt step and it certainly makes the separation clearer in the pulls.
I have noticed most people seem to use vinegar so I will give that a go next.
I have had varied success with one complete failure. ( I am going to redo that bark and see what I get with a little more knowledge I have gleaned from here).
My results have been very low perhaps around 0.1% so I am looking to improve that hopefully.
I did notice that it is pretty easy to clean up the result with just one extra process
Once the freeze precip was done and the spice dried I added naptha once again and slowly warmed it in a bowl of hot tap water. I was swirling the liquid in the beaker as I did it and at one point the darker spice was caollecting in the middle and was really dark. At the time I didn't act so I missed it as the temperature increased that too dissolved. I haven't yet fully repeated that but I have been able to clean it easily just by pooring of the liquid when the goo collects and doing two freeze lots. As my returns haven't been that good yet I haven't really refined the process yet.
I am thinking that slow could be good and the next lot I will process (reprocess the failed batch) I will try a slow cooker and see how that goes. I like the pressure cooker idea but they are a little expensive at the moment.
I just got some seeds so I will have a backyard full of wattles in a few years but for now it is just from what I can find and get responsibly.
At least A.Acuminata is pretty common in WA.
Oh yeah and does anyone know of a place to get heptane at a reasonable price in Western Australia?
I am really enjoying this little rabbit hole.
